previous 2/10 next 4/10  Jamaica 0 - 5 Persepolis (379060428)

Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 1691 to Royal Blues Arena. Vítor Antunes was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Giancarlo Povolo and Oskar Rosenlund. Jamaica started off with a 5-4-1 lineup. They fielded: Gonzales - Trionfini, Simkin, Milovanovic, Korus, Barbat - Crook, Burke, Price, Symonette - Kajzerek.

Persepolis decided to use a 4-4-2 set up. The following players took the field: Narkiewicz - Vaivars, da Vacariza, Sharafi, Cal - Stavlas, Ahmadzadeh, Técher, Conroy - Fong, Vahidi.

Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Jamaica. 8 minutes into the game, Jamaica seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a inadequate level of organisation. After 19 minutes, Persepolis's B. Vahidi made his way through the middle and nonchalantly placed the ball out of the keeper's reach, putting the visitors up 0 - 1. After 20 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as Jamaica found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to weak. Persepolis's M. Ahmadzadeh made it through the home team's defence on the right hand side 29 minutes into the match. After rounding the keeper, he only had to place the ball in the unguarded goal when a defender slid in and cleared the ball off the line. Good work by the Jamaica defensive line after 30 minutes produced a good counterattack chance, which cut elegantly down the middle of the pitch and found P. Trionfini alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide. Had it not been for one of the home defenders, D. Fong would have put Persepolis up another goal 32 minutes into the match with his audacious lob from the right wing. With the scoreboard showing that 33 minutes had been played, Persepolis nearly put themselves up another goal after I. Cal came through on the left. Fortunately for the home crowd, the keeper made the save. A counterattack by Jamaica after 34 minutes could have resulted in a goal, but R. Price, coming in on the left, couldn't get the shot off. Halftime score was 0 - 1. Persepolis enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 77 percent of possession.

A review of the gameplan helped Jamaica get back to a passable organisation when the referee blew his whistle again. After 46 minutes, Jamaica switched G. Barbat with A. Rouyer, hoping for a quick impact on the pitch. The bench was restless, and with 46 minutes passed Jamaica's coach gave J. Granollachs the opportunity the player had been hoping for. A. Simkin reluctantly left the field. Jamaica needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 46 minutes P. Trionfini made way for P. Dello. With 49 minutes played, J. Granollachs of Jamaica fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving. 56 minutes into the game, Jamaica had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to inadequate. The coach of Persepolis was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up. After 60 minutes, S. Asadi came on for M. Ahmadzadeh. The Persepolis players could smell victory in the air. B. Vahidi wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for A. Chiucchi after 70 minutes. After 78 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for C. da Vacariza who increased Persepolis's lead to 0 - 2. 81 minutes in, Persepolis appeared unsure on how to play and their organisation was only solid. After 84 minutes, an incisive pass through the middle gave C. da Vacariza a chance to increase the lead for Persepolis, and he did not disappoint. The score was then 0 - 3. J. Conroy of Persepolis took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 88 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 0 - 4. Confident in their lead, Persepolis's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. A scuffle developed as players from both sides clashed following a tussle in the centre of the field 89 minutes into the match. After regaining order and consulting his linesman, the referee called Persepolis's C. da Vacariza to one side and produced a red card for the player. With 89 minutes of the game having been played, R. Price received a blow to the hip in a collision and was unable to continue. Jamaica, with no available replacements, now faced the prospect of finishing the game with a reduced number of players. Having been awarded a free kick in an awkward position after 89 minutes, Persepolis did not go for a shot but instead fired the ball hard into the 6 yard box. After a brief tussle with his marker, D. Fong was able to power the ball past the keeper to make the score 0 - 5. Jamaica had no available replacements when G. Gonzales had to leave the game after 89 minutes because of a pulled tendon, leaving the team a man short. A field player had to replace the goalkeeper, and this difficult task fell to A. Rouyer . 89 minutes into the game, Jamaica seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to weak. Persepolis had most of the ball, with 87 percent of possession.

Jamaica's best player was P. Kajzerek. On the other hand, A. Rouyer's play was disheartening. Persepolis's top performer was clearly A. Chiucchi. A. Sharafi turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 0 - 5.
