Clear skies welcomed the 48900 spectators who had made their way to Viatodos Dragon Arena. Edgars Golts was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Vasile Ispas and Mikko Löfberg. Viatodos tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. Starters: Caille - Kearin, Dvirnyk, Lukele - Bertelsen, Santanera, Weinberger, Renteria, Aschauer - Ciotti, Grünenfelder.

Portogal started off with a 4-4-2 lineup. They fielded: Batista - Lahr, Zmitrowicz, Erva, Lesík - Leu, Valeev, Motta-Veiga, Oskarsson - Collini, Tindyebwa.

Portogal were relying on their ability to counter-attack. J. Grünenfelder's tried to storm through the defence after 7 minutes, but F. Zmitrowicz was just too fast to shake off and the rest of the defence got back to cover. Viatodos made a bid to take the lead as a ball coming in on the right hand side left G. Santanera completely alone with keeper H. Batista, who made a spectacular block. With 14 minutes played M. Weinberger almost put the home team one ahead on a cross coming in from the right, but the shot went just wide. With 19 minutes played Y. Dvirnyk almost gave the home side the lead with an unexpected free kick set up, but the visitors' H. Batista was onto it, grabbing the would be breakthrough ball. Viatodos's J. Renteria placed the ball right at his teammate's feet after a corner, but J. Grünenfelder couldn't finish. Some great play up the middle by Viatodos led to a chance for J. Grünenfelder to score after 29 minutes, but the shot hit the crossbar. Portogal almost scored after a counterattack 30 minutes into the match, but V. Valeev took a shot from the left that landed harmlessly in the side of the net. 31 minutes into the game, A. Erva almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. 0 - 0 was the score after the first half. Viatodos enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 63 percent of possession.

Viatodos's S. Bertelsen tried to break through in the middle repeatedly, but couldn't get past the visitors' defenders. The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 51 minutes courtesy of a breakthrough from L. Ciotti, who scored with a stunning volley following a cross from the right wing. G. Santanera of Viatodos received a yellow card after 52 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour. The Viatodos players could smell victory in the air. S. Aschauer wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for K. Silivistras after 55 minutes. After 55 minutes, Portogal used a short break in the game to take new instructions from their coach. The coach of Viatodos was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up. After 60 minutes, K. Haugstad came on for J. Renteria. The bench was restless, and with 63 minutes passed Portogal's coach gave J. Gherrini the opportunity the player had been hoping for. R. Motta-Veiga reluctantly left the field. G. Santanera wanted to play on, but the Viatodos coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 65 minutes into the game by S. Niinijärvi. After 74 minutes of the match, the manager still hoped to turn things around. J. Gherrini was ordered to assume a different position on the pitch. He took the place of V.
