previous 2/10 next 4/10  Tomta 4 - 5 liazinha (394288277)

Clear skies welcomed the 274 spectators who had made their way to Bares Arena. Erich Buchner was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Dennis Wagner and Iñigo Aimar. Tomta had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. The following players had been chosen: Zeković - de Alencar, Abrantes, Melro, Manfré - Altamirano, Diniz, La Piana, Cunha Bueno - da Silva Sá, Fattahi.

liazinha started off with a 4-5-1 lineup. The following players took the field: Melo - Neißl, Canalda, Almeida Jr., Sinagra - Saci, Aulén, Martignetti, Álava, Buiteman - Caldentey.

It was an obvious ambition of Tomta to use their ability at attacking on the flanks. The celebrations in the stands could only mean one thing - G. La Piana's free kick had found the back of the net and put Tomta ahead 1 - 0! The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave R. Caldentey from liazinha a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 32 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! R. Buiteman made a good effort at breaking through on the right, but the home team's left defence cleared the ball to a corner. 39 minutes into the game, liazinha seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a passable level of organisation. After 40 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as liazinha found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to poor. Cheers filled the stadium as F. Fattahi broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 2 - 0 to Tomta. 2 - 0 was the score after the first half. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by liazinha, with 54 percent of the ball.

Despite his frustration resulting in the smashing of a few teacups, the coach of liazinha was able to get his message across, and raised liazinha's organisation to passable. As the match clock hit 46 minutes, Tomta regrouped to try and keep their initiative in the game. F. Fattahi high-fived M. da Silva Sá as they swapped positions on the team. With 55 minutes showing on the scoreboard clock, liazinha showed some good skill and were able to reduce the score to 2 - 1 when P. Martignetti got past the home side's central defenders right in front of the goal. The referee was not popular with the home supporters after he awarded liazinha a controversial penalty after 59 minutes. L. Aulén made no mistake, levelling the score at 2 - 2. H. Neißl of liazinha received a yellow card after 65 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour. As the 70 minute mark approached, the Tomta coach decided it was time for a substitution. M. da Silva Sá reluctantly made way for C. Atouguia on the pitch. The liazinha free kick 81 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of R. Caldentey, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 2 - 3! With 82 minutes played, the Tomta coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around. A. Góes came on, F. Diniz had to leave the fray. F. Abrantes showed the skills that make him a real crowd pleaser as he, after 84 minutes, wove through the guests' entire central defence and put the 3 - 3 equaliser away. liazinha enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 62 percent of possession.

After the regular 90 minutes, the agony of extra time followed. A review of the gameplan helped liazinha get back to a solid organisation when the referee blew his whistle again. This was a good period for the visitors, with several opportunities to take the lead, particularly when D. Sinagra slipped through the defence on the right to come up alone against V. Zeković, but the home side's keeper showed his lightning reflexes. The home crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief when R. Caldentey was unable to put the ball in the net after his show of skill down the left 98 minutes into the match. He was seen beating the pitch in frustration at missing such a good chance to give his team the lead! Tomta's A. de Alencar was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 102 minutes. Some great play up the middle by Tomta led to a chance for C. Atouguia to score after 103 minutes, but the shot hit the crossbar. With the score still deadlocked after extra time, the teams took to the field for a penalty shoot-out to decide the winner.

Tomta's G. La Piana didn't hesitate but A. Melo managed the save, resulting in an unchanged 3 - 3 score. liazinha's T. Saci kept his cool as he faced down V. Zeković. His composure paid off as he scored easily for 3 - 4. Oooh - how unlucky! Tomta's A. Altamirano attempt hit the underside of the bar, but rebounded down into the grateful arms of A. Melo. The score stays 3 - 4. liazinha's R. Caldentey looked like he knew exactly where he wanted to put the ball, but unfortunately his shot went wide of the left hand post. Still 3 - 4. Tomta's F. Abrantes looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. liazinha's D. Sinagra didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of V. Zeković. The score remained 3 - 4. There aren't many players that have the cheek to take a penalty like that! Tomta's J. Cunha Bueno showed he was one of them, as he made it 4 - 4. Clearly nervous from the start, liazinha's H. Neißl took a long run up, but could only blast the ball over the bar. The score remains 4 - 4. Tomta's A. Melro looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. liazinha's A. Melo was relaxed as he smoothly put the ball in the net. 4 - 5! The most dominating Tomta player was without a doubt A. Altamirano. However, A. Melro made a disastrous appearance. liazinha's best player was M. Álava. P. Martignetti turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 4 - 5.
