previous 2/11 next 4/11  West 0 - 7 Penguins (234684121)

The 7000 spectators at West Field were in for an afternoon of sunshine. Giuseppe Bologni was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Hennes Benefeldt and Erik-Rein Gelissen. West started off with a 4-4-2 lineup. They fielded: Zhong-Yan - Kiu, Yee-Teng, Chee-Weng, Alias - Sun-Tak, Nhu-Nguyen, Minh, Ee-Heong - Dong-Sun, Van-Hao.

A 2-5-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Penguins. The following players had been chosen: Lauknes - Cheng Yi, Rincón - Amora, Lubawski, Geosits, Crescentino, Emmeloord - Zboun, Calado, Mikeš.

A mistake by the home side's central defence after 12 minutes allowed P. Mikeš to score for Penguins. The scoreboard now read 0 - 1. West's L. Sun-Tak had to watch the rest of the game from the sidelines, after twisting his ankle with 23 minutes having been played. L. Chem-Tov was the replacement. 24 minutes into the game, Penguins seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to poor. R. Alias's technique was perfect on this sunny day and led to some breathtaking tricks that bamboozled the defence. After 29 minutes, Penguins's R. Zboun burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 0 - 2. The home side worked their way through the middle and almost got one back when L. Chem-Tov tried to sneak the ball past the keeper. E. Lauknes was too alert for that! West's L. Chem-Tov got himself booked for a foul. Unfortunately for Penguins, P. Mikeš was injured when the game became more physical, and he had to leave the field. K. Mowat replaced him. 40 minutes in, Penguins appeared unsure on how to play and their organisation was only wretched. The visitors' H. Calado took advantage of a misunderstanding between the home side's goalie and centre backs 41 minutes into the match. 0 - 3 for Penguins. Some fine movement on the left led to a Penguins goal after 42 minutes, making it 0 - 4. H. Emmeloord was noted down as the scorer. At this point, it was obvious that the players of Penguins lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. T. Yee-Teng of West was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle. Halftime score was 0 - 4. Penguins claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 61 percent.

A review of the gameplan helped Penguins get back to a inadequate organisation when the referee blew his whistle again. K. Mowat didn't pace himself at all, and after a series of daring offensive runs he was too tired to help out in the defensive play. Having been awarded a free kick in an awkward position after 61 minutes, Penguins did not go for a shot but instead fired the ball hard into the 6 yard box. After a brief tussle with his marker, R. Zboun was able to power the ball past the keeper to make the score 0 - 5. 74 minutes into the game, Penguins had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to inadequate. H. Emmeloord received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 75 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 0 - 6. The Penguins fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early. Penguins came close to extending their lead as K. Mowat delivered a low effort on goal from the right after 77 minutes, but the angle was too narrow and the shot went harmlessly into the side netting. 86 minutes in, Penguins appeared unsure on how to play and their organisation was only inadequate. After 90 minutes, Penguins's H. Calado burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 0 - 7. After 90 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as Penguins found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to poor. Possession in this half belonged to Penguins, who controlled the ball 72 percent of the time.

Most important West player was Y. Ee-Heong. J. Nhu-Nguyen was a disappointment, however. Penguins's best player was K. Mowat. E. Lauknes on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 0 - 7.
