previous 6/6 next 2/6  Vitoria 0 - 1 Milan (254541383)

The 7000 spectators at Praia Stadium were in for an afternoon of sunshine. Adalberto Teruel was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Pietro Richer and Mieczysław Buze. A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Vitoria. Lineup: Praça - Rua, Gomes, Lemos, Ventura - Moura, Campos, Caldeira, Cancela - Pinheiro, Matos.

Milan decided to use a 5-3-2 set up. They fielded: Nunes - Armellin, Rossi, Gruttadauria, Mikelin, Even - Drivas, Pinhal, Cananea - Vouga, Solakidis.

Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Milan. Milan had a great opportunity to score following a counterattack after 2 minutes, but T. Solakidis's shot from the left sailed high over the bar. After 9 minutes, the defensive line of Milan created a counterattack through the middle that gave A. Cananea a good look at the goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. D. Armellin came close to putting the visiting team one up 12 minutes into the match, following a solo raid down the middle, but D. Praça managed to tip the ball to a corner. 0 - 0 was the halftime score. Vitoria enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 57 percent of possession.

A mistake by the home side's central defence after 51 minutes allowed L. Gruttadauria to score for Milan. The scoreboard now read 0 - 1. The heat made it a terrible day for P. Caldeira, who seemed unable to keep up with the other players. D. Armellin wanted to play on, but the Milan coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 65 minutes into the game by J. Pyskaty. The Milan players could smell victory in the air. M. Pinhal wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for Ó. Valenciano after 65 minutes. Vitoria's Â. Campos made an attempt at equalising 73 minutes into the match, coming in from the right, but the ball hit the post and the defence easily cleared the rebound. Vitoria's E. Gomes got himself booked for a foul. Milan's A. Cananea made it through the home team's defence on the right hand side 79 minutes into the match. After rounding the keeper, he only had to place the ball in the unguarded goal when a defender slid in and cleared the ball off the line. After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, D. Mikelin got himself booked. The manager of Milan was not happy. J. Pyskaty wasn't much help defensively. His energy-consuming forward runs proved quite costly in the oppressive heat. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Milan, with 57 percent of the ball.

Vitoria's best player was Â. Campos. P. Caldeira on the other hand, had a terrible day. Milan's top performer was clearly J. Pyskaty. D. Mikelin turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 0 - 1.
