Restelli was able to even the score after 6 minutes to make the score 1 - 1. V. Sáinz caused the crowd to go mental with his goal up the middle after 21 minutes. This gave Campinense the 2 - 1 lead. Mainz had a chance to level the score as J. Guanaes suddenly found himself free in the middle of the box with only the keeper to beat, but he misjudged the finish, and only managed to hit the bar. 2 - 1 was the score after the first half. Possession in this half belonged to Mainz, who controlled the ball 61 percent of the time.

Mainz were close to putting the equaliser away after 51 minutes as the opposing defence lost control of the ball to M. Lee in a scuffle towards the left of the goal, but in the end the ball was cleared over the dead ball line. A cross coming in on the right hand side left M. Most important Campinense player was O. Alasaari. D. Grecu was a disappointment, however. C. Bremenkamp performed admirably for Mainz. However, O. Lula made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 2 - 2.
