Southern 3 - 4 ESW

1979 spectators had come to Arena of Southern Dreams this cloudy day. Jürn Handler was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Thanos Kasselas and Arjen van der Hall. Southern tactics involved an interesting 4-5-1 combination. The following players had been selected: Abreu - Lind, van Strijen, Sijes, van Hilst - Kamphuis, Chavin, van Helmond, Munniksma, de Ridder - Grootjans.

A 5-5-0 alignment was the formation of choice for ESW. Starters: Steri - Ex, Ex, Teffer, Clarisse, Wolvensberg - van der Togt, Schneidewind, Peszeni, Serin, Witteveen -.

Southern used their skill at pressing to close down their opponents all over the field. It was obvious that ESW were using their pressing skill as their primary tactic. Southern's ability to press all over the field paid off frequently. ESW's talent at pressing frustrated their opponents and the fans as the game became a stalemate in the middle of the park. The pressing tactics used by Southern were successful as the ball didn't make it out of the middle third very much. Big paper red cards were being held up by the opposing supporters with 35 minutes on the clock after L. van der Togt's mistimed tackle from behind. The referee only showed the ESW player a yellow card though. As L. Ex had, completely unprovoked, swept the legs out from under an opponent in front of a linesman, the referee gave the ESW player a red card without batting an eye. Halftime score was 0 - 0. The statistics showed Southern in control of the ball, with 53 percent possession.

Southern fans held their breath as B. van Helmond gallivanted down the left side. He successfully avoided all challenges and fired home the go-ahead goal for 1 - 0! Everyone knows L. van Strijen is the man to mark on corner kicks, but 80 minutes in he got free of the defender and set a ball towards goal, which was saved by the keeper. A well placed corner kick from E. Serin was followed by K. Ex's hard but accurate header. The nice combination marked a goal for ESW, the score now 1 - 1. As the 89 minute mark approached, the Southern manager decided it was time for a substitution. E. Munniksma reluctantly made way for B. Jacobs. With the clock showing 89 minutes, the fourth official held up the substitution board. S. Chavin looked to see that it was his number in red, so he made his way over to the sideline and swapped out for R. Dittrich, though he would have liked to continue. 89 minutes into the game, Southern wanted to bring some new energy to their game. B. van Helmond gave H. Dirven a quick hug as he left the field. P. Steri got new instructions from the ESW coach after 89 minutes. He changed positions with G. Clarisse soon after. After 89 minutes, the ESW coach made a sign to L. van der Togt, who soon changed positions with K. Ex. As the match reached the 89 minute mark, ESW decided to regroup. A. Peszeni gave E. Teffer a little pat on the back as they changed positions on the field. After 89 minutes, the ESW coach wanted to see a new face on the field, waving L. Wolvensberg off. T. Schenkhuizen took his place. Southern won the midfield battle for the half, with 71 percent possession of the ball.

As neither team was able to score a late winner, the teams took to the field again for extra time. The Southern coach adjusted their lineup after 91 minutes. H. Sijes and F. Kamphuis assumed each other's positions. With 91 minutes played, the Southern manager called F. de Ridder over to the sideline and told him to switch places with E. van Hilst. At this time in the match, Southern were using their skill at pressing to successfully stifle the game. After 116 minutes, ESW's D. Witteveen successfully broke up a pass with his face. Instinctively, he got up again only to unintentionally use his now-throbbing schnozz to break up a second pass. As he was carted off for a concussion check, B. Świerkowski ran onto the field to take his place. The scores were still level, so the match had to be settled with penalties.

Southern's E. Grootjans hesitated a long time before shooting. Maybe too long, as his penalty flew just wide of the left hand post. Still 1 - 1. Oh, the sweet feet of technical E. Serin... His left one gave ESW a lovely goal. 1 - 2. Clearly nervous from the start, Southern's F. Kamphuis went for too much power, and sent his shot far wide of the goal. The score remains 1 - 2. ESW's G. Clarisse proved he has nerves of steel from the penalty spot, changing the score to 1 - 3. There aren't many players who can pull that kind of shot off! Southern's F. de Ridder showed he was one of them, as he made it 2 - 3. A confident H. Schneidewind of ESW put the ball right where he wanted, but C. Abreu was there for the save. No goal. A badly laid penalty by Southern's C. Abreu was surrendered by G. Clarisse, who took an equally bad dive, making the score 3 - 3. ESW's P. Steri cockily booted the ball after a short run-up. The penalty, going just wide of the mark, didn't produce a goal. Southern's L. van Strijen didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of G. Clarisse. The score remained 3 - 3. ESW's E. Teffer looked nervous on his walk from the center circle. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. Southern's E. van Hilst didn't hesitate but G. Clarisse managed the save, resulting in an unchanged 3 - 3 score. Overwhelmed by the pressure, ESW's T. Schenkhuizen went straight down the middle - right into the grateful arms of C. Abreu. The scores stays 3 - 3. Clearly nervous from the start, Southern's H. Sijes went for too much power, and sent his shot far wide of the goal. The score remains 3 - 3. ESW's K. Ex didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of C. Abreu. The score remained 3 - 3. Southern fans were already on their feet after M. Lind hit a perfect penalty but somehow G. Clarisse managed to tip it over the bar. The score remains 3 - 3. ESW's B. Świerkowski didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of C. Abreu. The score remained 3 - 3. Southern's R. Dittrich looked nervous on his walk from the center circle. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. ESW's L. van der Togt penalty shot was very well placed but C. Abreu went the right way, blocking it spectacularly. The score was still 3 - 3. Southern's B. Jacobs looked nervous on his walk from the center circle. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. ESW's A. Peszeni was relaxed as he smoothly put the ball into the net. 3 - 4! R. Dittrich performed admirably for Southern. M. Lind was a disappointment, however. ESW's best player was G. Clarisse. However, P. Steri made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 3 - 4.
