Southern 3 - 4 ESW

1979 spectators had come to Arena of Southern Dreams this cloudy day. Jürn Handler was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Thanos Kasselas and Arjen van der Hall. Southern tactics involved an interesting 4-5-1 combination. The following players had been chosen: Abreu - Lind, van Strijen, Sijes, van Hilst - Kamphuis, Chavin, van Helmond, Munniksma, de Ridder - Grootjans.

A 5-5-0 alignment was the formation of choice for ESW. Starters: Steri - Ex, Ex, Teffer, Clarisse, Wolvensberg - van der Togt, Schneidewind, Peszeni, Serin, Witteveen -.

Southern used their skill at pressing to cut off the attack angles of their opponents all over the field. It was obvious that ESW were using their pressing skill as their primary tactic. Southern's ability to press all over the field frequently paid dividends. ESW's talent at pressing frustrated the spectators as the game became a dire midfield struggle. The pressing tactics used by Southern were successful as the ball remained close to the half way line at all times. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave L. van der Togt from ESW a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 35 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! As L. Ex had, completely unprovoked, swept the legs out from under an opponent in front of a linesman, the referee gave the ESW player a red card without batting an eyelid. Halftime score was 0 - 0. Southern claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 53 percent.

Southern fans held their breath as B. van Helmond scampered down the left side. He successfully avoided all challenges and cracked home the shot for 1 - 0! L. van Strijen always provides an aerial threat at corners, and with 80 minutes gone, he demonstrated this, outjumping his marker, then letting out an anguished howl as his powerful header went narrowly wide. A well placed corner kick from E. Serin was followed by K. Ex's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for ESW, the score now 1 - 1. As the 89 minute mark approached, the Southern coach decided it was time for a substitution. E. Munniksma reluctantly made way for B. Jacobs on the pitch. S. Chavin would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise. R. Dittrich entered the game for Southern as the match clock showed 89 minutes. 89 minutes into the game, Southern wanted to bring some new energy to their game. B. van Helmond gave H. Dirven a quick hug as he left the field. P. Steri got new instructions from the ESW coach after 89 minutes. He changed positions with G. Clarisse soon after. After 89 minutes, the ESW coach made a sign to L. van der Togt, who soon changed positions with K. Ex. As the clock reached 89 minutes, ESW decided to regroup. A. Peszeni gave E. Teffer a little pat on the back as they changed positions on the pitch. After 89 minutes, the ESW coach wanted to see a new face on the pitch, waving L. Wolvensberg off the field. T. Schenkhuizen took his place. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Southern, with 71 percent of the ball.

As neither team was able to break the deadlock before the end of regular play, the teams took to the field again for extra time. The Southern coach adjusted their lineup with 91 minutes gone. H. Sijes and F. Kamphuis assumed each other's positions. After 91 minutes, the Southern manager redeployed his men. F. de Ridder swapped positions with E. van Hilst. At this time in the match, Southern were using their skill at pressing to successfully stifle the game. ESW's D. Witteveen left the field after 116 minutes because of a nasty blow to the shin. His replacement was B. Świerkowski. The result was still a draw, so the match had to be settled with penalties.

Southern's E. Grootjans looked like he knew exactly where he wanted to put the ball, but unfortunately his shot went wide of the left hand post. Still 1 - 1. Oh, the sweet feet of technical E. Serin... His left one gave ESW a lovely goal. 1 - 2. Clearly nervous from the start, Southern's F. Kamphuis took a long run up, but could only blast the ball over the bar. The score remains 1 - 2. ESW's G. Clarisse showed he has nerves of steel when it comes to penalties, easily changing the score to 1 - 3. There aren't many players that have the cheek to take a penalty like that! Southern's F. de Ridder showed he was one of them, as he made it 2 - 3. A confident H. Schneidewind of ESW put the ball right where he wanted, but C. Abreu was right there for the save. No goal. A badly laid penalty by Southern's C. Abreu was surrendered by G. Clarisse, who took an equally bad dive, making the score 3 - 3. ESW's P. Steri cockily booted the ball with a short-and-fast instep. The penalty, going just wide of the mark, didn't produce a goal. Southern's L. van Strijen didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of G. Clarisse. The score remained 3 - 3. ESW's E. Teffer looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. Southern's E. van Hilst didn't hesitate but G. Clarisse managed the save, resulting in an unchanged 3 - 3 score. Oooh - how unlucky! ESW's T. Schenkhuizen attempt hit the underside of the bar, but rebounded down into the grateful arms of C. Abreu. The score stays 3 - 3. Clearly nervous from the start, Southern's H. Sijes took a long run up, but could only blast the ball over the bar. The score remains 3 - 3. ESW's K. Ex didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of C. Abreu. The score remained 3 - 3. Southern's M. Lind drove the ball hard to the corner but couldn't get it past the outstretched arm of G. Clarisse. The score remains 3 - 3. ESW's B. Świerkowski didn't look like he was confident as he stepped up, and produced a badly struck penalty - right into the arms of C. Abreu. The score remained 3 - 3. Southern's R. Dittrich looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. ESW's L. van der Togt penalty shot was very well placed but C. Abreu went the right way, blocking it spectacularly. The score was still 3 - 3. Southern's B. Jacobs looked nervous even as he was putting the ball on the spot. He didn't take much of a run up, and his weak shot was easily saved by the keeper. ESW's A. Peszeni was relaxed as he smoothly put the ball in the net. 3 - 4! R. Dittrich performed admirably for Southern. M. Lind was a disappointment, however. ESW's best player was G. Clarisse. However, P. Steri made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 3 - 4.
