Anlen 3 - 0 SMVP

The crowd of 54745 turning up at Anlen Arena today were greeted with some nasty showers of rain. Roger Høyer was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Ottó Pósa and Laurent Ferreira. Our studio analysts were correct. Anlen has taken the field in a 3-5-2 alignment. The following players took the field: Velasco - Kūtnieks, Zelin, Zheleznyak - Kharlamov, Hulak, Urķis, Buhreiters, Freimanis - Davidson, Gorkun.

Cry "havoc" and let loose the dogs of war! SMVP will go to battle in a 3-5-2 formation. The following players had been selected: Starý - van Panhuis, Irsten, Trut - Maczkowski, Graça, Tyberghien, Destruel, Civa - Iske, De Bakker.

Anlen created a good opportunity to score 6 minutes into the game when P. Freimanis's hooked ball from the left created a scuffle in front of the goal, but the visitors' defenders eventually won out. Oh, it's a stupendous shot on goal! A Caravaggio! A Michaelangelo! A Venus on the Half Shell! 20 minutes into the match and L. Davidson has created art for the ages for Anlen, putting them ahead 1 - 0. I'm weeping. I can't stop my eyes. After a play down the right 23 minutes into the match, Anlen's G. Kūtnieks unleashed a ferocious shot that smashed into the roof of the net - after going over the crossbar. As quick as a flash, L. Davidson of Anlen lost his man and passed the ball to the wide-open A. Gorkun who easily hit it home to make it 2 - 0. SMVP's right side looked dangerous after 28 minutes, as C. De Bakker broke through. H. Velasco continued to stifle them, however, as he made the save look easy. A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Anlen's A. Gorkun bringing the lead up to 3 - 0. Anlen's players now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle. The teams went for the halftime break at 3 - 0. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Anlen would have 55 percent possession in this half was spot on!

The home side's R. Urķis came close to extending the lead after 50 minutes. His shot came in from the right but Z. Starý managed to push it wide with his fingertips. P. Freimanis really should have scored when he was chosen by fate to confront a wide open goal following a great flick by V. Kharlamov after a corner. The visitors got a chance to pulling one back after 66 minutes, due to a defensive blunder leaving F. Destruel completely unmarked. His strike was pathetic though, rolling slowly to the home side's keeper. With 72 minutes played, Anlen's M. Hulak received a yellow card for challenging a play with his cleats first. That was no dive! SMVP's M. van Panhuis looked to be in real pain after being caught by a stray leg. The fans held their breath, but in the end he managed to get up and keep playing. With 75 minutes played, R. Urķis could have brought this one home for Anlen as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high. É. Iske, who often relies on his speed, had a rotten day on the drenched field. SMVP's M. van Panhuis was shown a yellow card after 82 minutes for slicing down an opponent. The Count appeared on the jumbotron and announced that Anlen had 55...55 percent possession. AH AH AH!

The most outstanding Anlen player was without a doubt L. Davidson. Good thing V. Kharlamov isn't a horse, because he'd surely be sent to the glue factory after that performance. Most important SMVP player was M. Graça. You can tell it was nickel beer night yesterday at the local bar because D. Civa seemed to stumble all over the pitch. The match ends 3 - 0.
