previous 7/10 next 9/10  Flames 9 - 0 PUMAS (374415855)

Due to an all-day shower, 7132 paying spectators got to see a match on a pitch-turned-bog at Estadio en Llamas. David Galperin was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Franz Rechberger and Søren Jensen. Flames decided to use a 3-4-3 set up. They fielded: Cabezón - Lemos, Velasco Aragón, Esperón - Blanco, Bustamante, Dávila, Arroyo - Ybarra, Esquivel, Burgos.

A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for PUMAS. The following players took the field: Menchaca - Guerrero, Gonzalez, Barbosa, Monroy Conesa - Sáez, Ledesma, Leyva, Fernández - Nájera, Pardo.

The boggy pitch disrupted the game, especially for technical players like M. Dávila. They were singing the praises of J. Arroyo 16 minutes into the match after his speculative chip from the middle of the penalty box found its way over the visitors' keeper to make the score 1 - 0 to Flames. Flames increased the lead as M. Dávila struck to make the score 2 - 0 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper. Confident in their lead, Flames's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. 36 minutes into the game, Flames had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to inadequate. Flames's F. Burgos increased the lead to 3 - 0, after he saw his shot go between the legs of the advancing goalkeeper following some good play down the right wing after 37 minutes. O. Nájera of PUMAS received a yellow card after 38 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour. Cheers filled the stadium as F. Burgos broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 4 - 0 to Flames. 43 minutes into the game, Flames seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a poor level of organisation. Things were going to get worse for the visitors. J. Arroyo squirmed through their central defence after 44 minutes, increasing the lead to 5 - 0. The teams went for the halftime break at 5 - 0. Flames had most of the ball, with 74 percent of possession.

Despite his frustration resulting in the smashing of a few teacups, the coach of Flames was able to get his message across, and raised Flames's organisation to passable. The corner kick from A. Velasco Aragón was powerfully met by the head of C. Esquivel to make the score 6 - 0. Flames's G. Blanco swung in a good chance from the left, but the visitors' defence were able to clear the ball. Flames put in a good effort on the right, but J. Bustamante saw his volley fly wide of the mark 58 minutes into the game. Flames solidified their lead at the 76 minute mark, as M. Dávila dribbled the ball through the opposing central defence and scored to make it 7 - 0. After 77 minutes, F. Lemos put Flames ahead 8 - 0 when he rose to head in a cross from the right wing. A late sliding challenge from O. Nájera was deemed to be his second yellow card offence by the referee, resulting in him being sent off, and PUMAS left a man down. J. Ybarra slipped and slithered in the wet grass. His usual rapid runs were nowhere to be seen today. A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Flames's G. Blanco increasing the lead to 9 - 0. Flames claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 77 percent.

Flames's best player was G. Blanco. On the other hand, V. Cabezón's play was disheartening. F. Monroy Conesa performed admirably for PUMAS. T. Menchaca turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 9 - 0.
