Ellesmere 1 - 3 Rangers (374451395)

A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 54515 to Peppard Park. Albert Dietens was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Samuel Bouin and Jerry Cock. Ellesmere had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. They fielded: Frade - Falcato, Ossai, McPartlin, Howe - Tulath, Battisti, Ben-Shimon, 有耀 (Youyao) - Brambilla, Kožený.

Rangers tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. The following players took the field: Masterson - Lyra, Ruiz, von Atzigen - Atasoy, Zwagerman, Rantzau, Cammarata, Kantola - Cox, Minder.

It was an obvious ambition of Rangers to use their ability at attacking on the flanks. Rangers's T. Cammarata managed to lose the defenders as he advanced down the right wing and scored, putting the visitors ahead after 2 minutes. 0 - 1. The home crowd was not impressed when T. Cammarata came in from the right, shooting hard to score after 9 minutes. Rangers were now up 0 - 2. Rangers increased their lead after 26 minutes when V. Lyra broke through on the right, upping the score to 0 - 3, much to the home crowd's dismay. At this point, it was obvious that the players of Rangers lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented. Halftime score was 0 - 3. Ellesmere enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 56 percent of possession.

The intense heat forced C. McPartlin into making some errors because he couldn't seem to keep up with the others. After 75 minutes S. Ben-Shimon could have reduced the lead with a blistering strike from the left wing, had it not been for an excellent block by the visitors' keeper. A marvellous Ellesmere effort on the right-hand side resulted in a goal after 88 minutes by K. Tulath, making the score 1 - 3. Ellesmere claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 55 percent.

Ellesmere's top performer was clearly R. Kožený. On the other hand, C. McPartlin's play was disheartening. Rangers's best player was V. Lyra. T. Rantzau was a disappointment, however. The match ends 1 - 3.
