Marjans 1 - 5 HKFC (374452951)

Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 19952 to Marjan's Wembley. Radomír Lichvár was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Åge Wessel and Emile Carpentier. Marjans had chosen a strategic 5-3-2 formation. Lineup: Underwood - Carretón, Freelong, Olivieri, Ashford, Villari - Dhawan, Hooper, Bamforth - Duffy, Ashley.

HKFC decided to use a 4-5-1 set up. The following players had been chosen: Ryan - Leonhard, Martin, Klasing, Karaca - Zocher-Gasser, Carozzi, Samitz, Söder, Martinsson - Riolo.

For their match strategy, Marjans had decided to use their ability to counter-attack whenever possible. Today, HKFC's strategy involved concentrating on the flanks for their attacks. M. Hooper hit the ball perfectly after 4 minutes to score for Marjans with a fabulous long shot. 1 - 0. E. Underwood's name was chanted throughout the stadium after he made a fantastic save from M. Samitz's shot from the left 12 minutes into the match. Marjans's N. Freelong got himself booked for a foul. HKFC were determined to attack on the wing and their central attempts were constantly abandoned in favour of the wings. HKFC were close to putting the equaliser away after 22 minutes as the opposing defence lost control of the ball to M. Samitz in a scuffle towards the left of the goal, but in the end the ball was cleared over the dead ball line. Marjans had a great opportunity to score following a counterattack after 23 minutes, but T. Ashford's shot from the left sailed high over the bar. The crowd was amused as J. Martin of HKFC used a few interesting tricks and dribbles to get into the penalty box. The finish by R. Riolo wasn't very amusing, however, as the ball flew way over the crossbar. The visitors refused to give in and, after 25 minutes, R. Riolo evened things up as he finished off a perfect pass from the right. 1 - 1 HKFC had a good opportunity to attack in the middle, but remembered their instructions to focus on wing attacks instead. 28 minutes into the game, D. Leonhard was a hair's breadth away from giving HKFC the lead with a shot from over on the left. A prompt block by E. Underwood saved the home team that time. A counterattack by Marjans after 29 minutes could have resulted in a goal, but V. Dhawan, coming in on the left, couldn't get the shot off. Marjans's P. Ashley was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 30 minutes. The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 1. Possession in this half belonged to HKFC, who controlled the ball 76 percent of the time.

The home crowd was not impressed by the fancy moves of HKFC's G. Klasing after 59 minutes. He converted a pass from the left for a goal, resulting in the visitors taking the 1 - 2 lead. With 65 minutes played, HKFC put themselves up 1 - 3 after an attack from the right, caused by a defensive blunder. The scorer was P. Zocher-Gasser. With 79 minutes played, a quick exchange of passes on the left wing freed P. Zocher-Gasser of HKFC to slip through the defence and score another goal for the visitors. That made the score 1 - 4. Confident in their lead, HKFC's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. P. Ashley of Marjans got sent off for kicking the ball after the whistle, a completely uncalled for move, earning him his second yellow card of the game. The visitors added to their lead 84 minutes into the game, after a sensational penalty kick by HKFC's P. Zocher-Gasser slid just past the home keeper. 1 - 5. That made three goals for P. Zocher-Gasser and he was marked down for the hat trick. A scuffle developed as players from both sides clashed following a tussle in the centre of the field 86 minutes into the match. After regaining order and consulting his linesman, the referee called Marjans's M. Hooper to one side and produced a red card for the player. HKFC enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 86 percent of possession.

Marjans's top performer was clearly E. Underwood. However, W. Carretón made a disastrous appearance. M. Söder performed admirably for HKFC. S. Ryan turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 1 - 5.
