The weather was pretty good, and a crowd of 7000 had shown up at
Ontario Field for the match.
Hans Fast Hansen was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Tomislav Svatoš and
Gernhard Gödecke.
Ontario started off with a 4-4-2 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Deschamps - Drański, MacKersey, Lemos, Saint-Aubin - Atkinson, Thongdang, Verreault, Bale - Artis, Munday.
Territories tactics involved an interesting 4-4-2 combination.
Lineup: Viduka - Al-Attar, Otis, Glendinning, Imhof - Lafond, Tétrault, Pears, Laviolette - Maisch, Redmond.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
L. Verreault from Ontario a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 10 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
G. Laviolette was the unlucky victim and couldn't continue the game, so Territories's
Y. Azulay had to come off the bench.
Ontario fans held their breath as
S. Atkinson scampered down the left side. He successfully avoided all challenges and cracked home the shot for 1 - 0!
S. Atkinson increased the lead for Ontario to 2 - 0, getting a head onto a hooked ball from the right. The ball looked to have taken a deflection on the way in, but he's claiming it!
After this, you could see that the players of Ontario were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals.
N. Kazazis was called on to replace Ontario's
W. Deschamps after 26 minutes following a nasty collision.
A well-executed free kick by
P. Drański after 29 minutes made it 3 - 0 for Ontario.
It was 3 - 0 at the break.
Ontario enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 56 percent of possession.
61 minutes into the game,
J. Saint-Aubin had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. In came
P. Desjardins.
A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Ontario's
K. Thongdang increasing the lead to 4 - 0.
J. Lafond of Territories was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle.
The visitors' right side was dangerous today;
I. Maisch made the home team's keeper look foolish as he easily reduced the lead to make it 4 - 1 74 minutes into the match.
T. Artis of Ontario received a yellow card after 75 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
With 80 minutes played,
S. Atkinson could have brought this one home for Ontario as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high.
Territories's
Y. Azulay got himself booked for a foul.
Ontario's
P. Desjardins had an excellent opportunity after 86 minutes, shooting after receiving a pass from the right hand side, but he missed the goal by miles!
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Ontario, with 57 percent of the ball.
Ontario's best player was
P. Drański.
N. Kazazis turned in a dismal performance, however.
Territories's top performer was clearly
I. Maisch.
On the other hand,
J. Viduka's play was disheartening.
The match ends 4 - 1.
