Clouds darkened the skies at
Estadio Droguinha as 405 spectators turned up for the match.
Joerg Klinge was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Erich Spindler and
Alexander Ivanov.
Esponjas decided to use a 3-5-2 set up.
They fielded: Lourenço - Paços, Teixeira, Dias Baptista - Garmash, Borowski, Feliciano, Baião, Pereira - Teixeira Neves, Lim.
Schmöllner started off with a 4-3-3 lineup.
Starters: Kramel - Maener, Tarnat, Axinescu, Jagalla - Leyerle, Marunić, Drenkard - Laanelepp, Bonke, Rosa.
Schmöllner clearly preferred using their ability to attack in the middle.
The visitors' central defence should have had no trouble clearing the pass to
V. Teixeira Neves, but the Esponjas player managed to shrug them off and fired a low shot past the keeper to give his team the lead. 1 - 0!
Schmöllner were determined to attack in the middle, even their wing attacks ended up centrally.
Schmöllner tied it all up, 25 minutes in, after a spectacular goal by
T. Jagalla, who miraculously broke through the home side's central defence, making it 1 - 1.
Many thought
A. Pereira ought to have been awarded a penalty 26 minutes into the game, as he went down trying to dribble around
J. Kramel after a determined run through the middle.
Esponjas took the lead after 36 minutes as a result of
H. Teixeira's peach of a shot from the right hand side of the box - placed beautifully in the top corner. 2 - 1.
Schmöllner's
C. Tarnat placed the ball right at his teammate's feet after a corner, but
R. Axinescu couldn't finish.
Esponjas's
L. Paços saw his fine effort strike the top of the bar following some good work up the middle by his teammates after 42 minutes.
Schmöllner had to make a substitution after 43 minutes.
T. Jagalla limped off the field and was replaced by
M. Scherfede.
2 - 1 was the halftime score.
Possession in this half belonged to Esponjas, who controlled the ball 62 percent of the time.
The score became 3 - 1 at 65 minutes into the game, when Esponjas were given a penalty which
V. Teixeira Neves blasted straight down the middle giving the keeper no chance!
71 minutes in, Schmöllner's
A. Maener received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first.
Esponjas increased the lead as
H. Teixeira struck to make the score 4 - 1 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper.
A speedy charge from the left side of the field increased the lead of Esponjas to 5 - 1 as
A. Garmash finished it off competently, firing in from an acute angle.
After this, you could see that the players of Esponjas were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
L. Marunić from Schmöllner a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 83 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
Esponjas's
H. Teixeira was shown a yellow card after 84 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
With 88 minutes played,
M. Scherfede of Schmöllner fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving.
Esponjas claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 61 percent.
Esponjas's best player was
A. Lim.
However,
H. Teixeira made a disastrous appearance.
Most important Schmöllner player was
C. Bonke.
J. Kramel on the other hand, had a terrible day.
The match ends 5 - 1.
