The weather was pretty good, and a crowd of 3400 had shown up at Stierkampf Arena for the match. Ulf Strömland was the appointed referee. The head coach flashed hand signals from the sideline and Stieregrinde formed up in a 2-5-3 combination. Let's hope the opposing sideline wasn't filming that. Lineup: Rottmann - Mauntler, Rouyer - Derose, Kaysel, Menzer, Veitschegger, Minder - Pons, Dujoux, Schnurrenberger.

After thorough analysis and consultation of astrological charts, Brugse decided to go with a 4-5-1 formation. The following players had been selected: Ergün - Van Varenbergh, Kaenel, Cappuyns, Francotte - Løvgren, Stenger, Smedsrud, Alí, Rubio - Ferrón.

For their match strategy, Stieregrinde had decided to use their weak ability to counter-attack whenever possible. 14 minutes into the game, P. Van Varenbergh was a hair's width away from giving Brugse the lead with a shot from the left. A timely dive by H. Rottmann saved the home team on this occasion. Good work by Stieregrinde's defensive line after 15 minutes produced a good counter-attack chance, one of which cut elegantly down the middle of the field and found T. Menzer alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide. J. Lassine was called on to replace Brugse's M. Løvgren after 25 minutes following a nasty collision. Given a free kick from an impossible angle, Stieregrinde went for a play that loyal fans may recognize from training. A square ball surprised the defense and let S. Dujoux slip through at goal. He hit it first time, making the score 1 - 0, 32 minutes into the game. 41 minutes had passed when Stieregrinde put themselves up 2 - 0 after the visiting defenders lost the ball to T. Menzer, who came up from the left and proceeded to easily go around the goalkeeper and knock the ball home. After this, you could see that Stieregrinde's players were mostly interested in killing time and holding on to their lead. P. Rouyer increased Stieregrinde's lead to 3 - 0, connecting with a hooked ball from the right. The away fans are claiming handball, to no avail. After more pushing and shoving than a pack of helicopter moms trying to get the last appointment for their snowflakes to see the Easter Bunny, Brugse's C. Ferrón finally got himself booked for a foul. 3 - 0 was the halftime score. The Count appeared on the jumbotron and announced that Stieregrinde had 58...58 percent possession. AH AH AH!

The bench was restless, and with 75 minutes gone Brugse's coach gave R. Zanobi the opportunity to try to change the team's fortunes. C. Ferrón reluctantly left the field. Brugse needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 75 minutes H. Stenger made way for M. Loit. The head of J. Mauntler connected with a beautiful corner kick after 83 minutes. He wasn't shooting, though, but rather passing to J. Veitschegger of Stieregrinde who buried the shot for 4 - 0. Stieregrinde put themselves up 5 - 0 when S. Minder broke through on the right, leaving the entire defensive delegation behind him. After 88 minutes, F. Pons put Stieregrinde ahead 6 - 0 when he rose to head in a hooked ball, the result of an effort from the right side. Almost all the way down at the corner flag, Brugse's A. Rubio somehow managed to get a perfect pass into the middle, impossible to miss for R. Zanobi, who scored for 6 - 1. A speedy charge from the left side of the field increased Stieregrinde's lead to 7 - 1 as J. Mauntler finished it off clinically, firing the shot from a terrible angle. Looks like Nate Silver was right again - his prediction that Stieregrinde would have 71 percent possession in this half was spot on!

Most important Stieregrinde player was S. Dujoux. I can't remember H. Rottmann ever having a worse night than he just had. Brugse's best player was R. Zanobi. Speaking of stinking up the place, P. Smedsrud sure smelled like the bottom of Batman's shoe after a night of crimefighting in Gotham. The match ends 7 - 1.
