It was an exceptionally sunny day for the crowd of 1003 that came out to
Olympic Stadium.
Derek Delany was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Sven Alt and
Kamil Przygocki.
Athina started off with a 4-3-3 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Ghelardoni - Zago, Branc, Alessandrini, Tobia - Sacchini, Ladan, Bellanca - Toffan, Battini, Defla.
Boris decided to use a 5-4-1 set up.
They fielded: Tapramaz - Aiguadé, Konttaniemi, Angermann, Sonntag-Burgos, Roffa - Arciotti, Fleancu, Ruffin, Jurzyk - Weintritt.
T. Weintritt enjoyed the sunshine and demonstrated his stunning technique over and over again.
10 minutes into the game, Athina seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to
inadequate.
N. Konttaniemi received some harsh words from his coach after he acted foolishly 30 minutes into the match, probably out of lack of experience, and almost let an opponent score.
With 35 minutes played, Athina's well-worked indirect free kick caused havoc in the penalty area, and when the ball eventually fell to
E. Battini he gleefully slotted the ball home to make it 1 - 0.
With 37 minutes played,
I. Branc could have brought this one home for Athina as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high.
T. Fleancu came close to levelling the score 41 minutes into the game, as he was set up with a through ball coming in from the left, but his shot hit the post.
42 minutes into the game, Athina had difficulty finding their positions and their organisation dropped to
poor.
It was 1 - 0 at the break.
Athina claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 51 percent.
During the break, Athina's coach went through the team's tactics yet again, getting them up to
passable organisation.
The referee showed Athina's
V. Zago the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
F. Ghelardoni's name was chanted throughout the stadium after he made a fantastic save from
S. Jurzyk's shot from the left 55 minutes into the match.
61 minutes in, Athina's
I. Branc received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first.
Boris were worse off though, as
T. Ruffin was unable to finish the game and no more substitutes were available!
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Athina, with 66 percent of the ball.
Athina's top performer was clearly
S. Sacchini.
However,
P. Tobia made a disastrous appearance.
The most dominating Boris player was without a doubt
B. Arciotti.
T. Fleancu was a disappointment, however.
The match ends 1 - 0.
