Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and
The Rovers Den saw a crowd turnout of 1401.
Francisco Alcaraz Casademunt was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Dušan Bobuľský and
Gallus Fried.
Rovers started off with a 2-5-3 lineup.
Lineup: Eagles - Avila, Stienstra - Henderson, Velouchiotis, Curran, Capece, Moore - Bex, Briceño, Quiros.
Soccerstars had chosen a strategic 3-4-3 formation.
The following players took the field: Truett - Kokoschka, Viner, Carter - Purba, Blackburn, MacCormack, Muldowney - Lane, Lyons, Ephraim.
The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 20 minutes courtesy of a breakthrough from
E. Avila, who scored with a stunning volley following a cross from the right wing.
After 36 minutes, the visitors tied it up at 1 - 1 when a fantastic pass from the left was finished off by
H. Ephraim.
38 minutes of the match played, and a comedy of errors by the home side gave the visitors a chance at the lead, but
P. Lyons, after finding himself dashing down on goal from the left with only the keeper to beat, sliced his shot horribly wide.
With 40 minutes played,
G. Viner of Soccerstars fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving.
The visiting
W. Muldowney was booed thoroughly by the home crowd 41 minutes into the game, after he broke through the middle and scored, resulting in the visitors taking the lead. 1 - 2 was the score.
It was 1 - 2 at the break.
Rovers had most of the ball, with 51 percent of possession.
The referee signalled a penalty 50 minutes into the game following an offence which looked like it was outside the box.
S. MacCormack knocked it home to make the score 1 - 3.
By now, the players in Soccerstars felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
Rovers's
E. Avila got himself booked for a foul.
The home crowd was not impressed when
P. Lyons came in from the right, shooting hard to score after 65 minutes. Soccerstars were now up 1 - 4.
After 77 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for
P. Lyons who increased Soccerstars's lead to 1 - 5.
The visitors'
W. Lane took advantage of a misunderstanding between the home side's goalie and centre backs 83 minutes into the match. 1 - 6 for Soccerstars.
Possession in this half belonged to Rovers, who controlled the ball 51 percent of the time.
L. Curran performed admirably for Rovers.
However,
P. Capece made a disastrous appearance.
Soccerstars's best player was
W. Lane.
L. Kokoschka turned in a dismal performance, however.
