03-06-2012 18.00
Clouds darkened the skies at
Tivoli-Neu as 12528 spectators turned up for the match.
Adam DeVane was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Sampsa Heikkinen and
Corneliu Ionitã.
WFC decided to use a 3-4-3 set up.
Lineup: Sretenović - Rasquilho, Baló, Blanca - Bleve, Rizzuto, van Hattem, Hegstad - Gaffney, Bylykbashi, Schönmann.
A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Ilionz.
The following players took the field: Cullen - Lutchmiah, Campbell-Orr, Cunningham, Harrington - Faulkner, Murphy, Bourne, Berg - Oldfield, Poldark.
The cannonball from 35 metres by
M. Rizzuto of WFC was an impressive sight, but didn't make it into the net.
The visitors' central defence should have had no trouble clearing the pass to
M. Blanca, but the WFC player managed to shrug them off and fired a low shot past the keeper to give his team the lead. 1 - 0!
A speedy charge from the left side of the field increased the lead of WFC to 2 - 0 as
J. Hegstad finished it off competently, firing in from an acute angle.
WFC had to make a substitution after 23 minutes.
M. Bylykbashi limped off the field and was replaced by
T. Bright-Thomas.
A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in WFC's
T. Bright-Thomas increasing the lead to 3 - 0.
After this, you could see that the players of WFC were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals.
WFC put in a good effort on the right, but
J. Gaffney saw his volley fly wide of the mark 37 minutes into the game.
39 minutes in, WFC's
J. Gaffney received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first.
3 - 0 was the score after the first half.
WFC had most of the ball, with 77 percent of possession.
J. Gaffney increased the lead for WFC to 4 - 0, getting a head onto a hooked ball from the right. The ball looked to have taken a deflection on the way in, but he's claiming it!
J. Hegstad had a fantastic opportunity to put WFC up another goal 49 minutes into the match, but he fired just over the crossbar.
M. Blanca struck a 30 metre free kick home 55 minutes into the match. 5 - 0 for the home team.
Against a lesser team, WFC could very well have succeeded with their smart indirect free kick routine after 63 minutes. A trio of passes took the ball all the way past the defenders, but by then the intended recipient was already blocked off and the keeper could make a leisurely save.
After 66 minutes,
J. Hegstad put WFC ahead 6 - 0 when he rose to head in a cross from the right wing.
The referee showed Ilionz's
M. Murphy the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
WFC claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 79 percent.
Most important WFC player was
J. Gaffney.
B. Sretenović on the other hand, had a terrible day.
The most dominating Ilionz player was without a doubt
L. Harrington.
R. Campbell-Orr turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 6 - 0.
