06-06-2012 17.15
The 2129 fans in attendance at
Zebbug United Arena were roasting in the hot sun.
Ozan Susus was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Cristian Damián Armida and
Magnus Pedersen.
Zebbug tactics involved an interesting 4-5-1 combination.
The following players had been chosen: Dobrescu - Benner, Mezencevas, Cirinei, Overwijk - Martignetti, Ganado, Crockford, Fenech, Retegui - Amdurski.
Sporting decided to use a 3-4-3 set up.
Lineup: Roquer - Anđelković, Medinilla, Aubert - Havrda, Barturen, Saseta, Cucala - Valerio, Paz, Florit.
Some great play up the middle by Zebbug led to a chance for
R. Overwijk to score after 14 minutes, but the shot hit the crossbar.
The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 30 minutes courtesy of a breakthrough from
E. Amdurski, who scored with a stunning volley following a cross from the right wing.
Zebbug increased the lead as
S. Cirinei struck to make the score 2 - 0 after an attack from the left left him unmarked in front of the keeper.
At this point, it was obvious that the players of Zebbug lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented.
Zebbug's
E. Amdurski increased the lead to 3 - 0, after he saw his shot go between the legs of the advancing goalkeeper following some good play down the right wing after 42 minutes.
Sporting's
Z. Anđelković was shown a yellow card after 44 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
3 - 0 was the score after the first half.
Zebbug enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 69 percent of possession.
Cheers filled the stadium as
K. Benner broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 4 - 0 to Zebbug.
Zebbug's
P. Martignetti got himself booked for a foul.
E. Amdurski wasn't much help defensively. His energy-consuming forward runs proved quite costly in the oppressive heat.
The Zebbug players could smell victory in the air.
J. Fenech wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for
R. Bess after 70 minutes.
With 74 minutes played, Zebbug put themselves up 5 - 0 when the visiting defenders lost the ball to
S. Crockford, who came up from the left and proceeded to coolly round the keeper and knock the ball home.
Things were deteriorating for the away team as Zebbug scored another to make it 6 - 0 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for
P. Martignetti after 78 minutes.
After 79 minutes, the away team failed to deal with a good exchange of passes on the right, and
R. Overwijk gave the Zebbug supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 7 - 0.
The coach of Zebbug was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up. After 82 minutes,
S. Calleja came on for
S. Cirinei.
Content with how the game was proceeding, the Zebbug coach let
V. Mesiti replace
R. Retegui after 86 minutes.
Possession in this half belonged to Zebbug, who controlled the ball 62 percent of the time.
Zebbug's top performer was clearly
E. Amdurski.
R. Bess was a disappointment, however.
H. Valerio performed admirably for Sporting.
On the other hand,
R. Aubert's play was disheartening.
The match ends 7 - 0.
