previous 1/4 next 3/4  Galati 1 - 0 United (380864399)

22151 spectators had come to Angels Arena this cloudy day. Ruperto Loaeza was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Hans Bredstål and Harold Cocu. Galati tactics involved an interesting 3-4-2 combination. The following players had been chosen: Reboll - Barjaktarević, Pärn, Giller - Mihut, Miozzari, Neves Brito, Ruonakoski - Haake, Rose.

United decided to use a 3-5-2 set up. Starters: Dinu - Blaga, Suteau, Sėlenis - Joca, Flonta, Tizzano, Mleşniţă, Ciupitu - Haniel von Rauch, Norman.

United clearly had decided to counter-attack when they could. Many thought Y. Giller ought to have been awarded a penalty 20 minutes into the game, as he went down trying to dribble around C. Dinu after a determined run through the middle. United's E. Flonta was shown a yellow card after 29 minutes for slicing down an opponent. Galati's Z. Neves Brito had to leave the pitch and there were no more available substitutions! Galati broke through on the left 33 minutes into the game, with Y. Giller firing in from an acute angle to give the home side a 1 - 0 lead. After 35 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as Galati found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to passable. T. Norman made a run for the goal 38 minutes into the game but the home team's left back managed to sort the situation out in the end. It was 1 - 0 at the break. United had most of the ball, with 54 percent of possession.

During the break, Galati's coach went through the team's tactics yet again, getting them up to solid organisation. Galati's D. Barjaktarević saw his fine effort strike the top of the bar following some good work up the middle by his teammates after 50 minutes. 66 minutes into the game, Galati seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a poor level of organisation. T. Norman made a good effort at breaking through on the right, but the home team's left defence cleared the ball to a corner. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by United, with 59 percent of the ball.

Galati's top performer was clearly M. Pärn. K. Rose turned in a dismal performance, however. Most important United player was T. Norman. However, T. Ciupitu made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 1 - 0.
