07-07-2012 12.00
Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 41792 to
Bruno Manzo.
Hieronim Hińcza was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Jostein Hansen and
Christoffer Bach.
Palermo started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Santiago - Barros, Skružný, Descamps - MacKail, Melgarejo, Leal, Tomaszewski, Chocontá - Pipa, Agić.
Carmine decided to use a 4-5-1 set up.
The following players took the field: Uhrskov - Benucci, Patarnello, Garbijo, Bucak - Kobiella, Angius, Chiarani, Miller, Demas - Alamos.
Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Carmine.
Palermo took the lead 3 minutes into the game by 1 - 0, as
A. Melgarejo elegantly received a long range pass through the middle, finishing off with a half-volley shot just below the bar.
A great save by keeper
B. Uhrskov after 7 minutes kept the visitors in the game after
D. Pipa struck from the left with a real cannonball.
The counterattacks of Carmine were deadly and 8 minutes into the game,
M. Benucci received a nice pass from the right flank, making it 1 - 1.
Carmine's
J. Kobiella was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 18 minutes.
Palermo had a good opportunity to take the lead as
M. MacKail came up the left side, but he struck the ball weakly and it went straight into the arms of
B. Uhrskov.
Palermo took the lead 25 minutes in, as
S. Chocontá broke through on the left and put the 2 - 1 shot just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper.
The teams went for the halftime break at 2 - 1.
Palermo enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 56 percent of possession.
62 minutes into the game,
A. Garbijo had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. In came
R. Andreou.
G. Chiarani became the new Carmine captain.
Palermo's
F. Barros's long shot really ought to have found the net 66 minutes into the match, but it fell just wide of the target.
O. Agić increased the lead for Palermo to 3 - 1, getting a head onto a hooked ball from the right. The ball looked to have taken a deflection on the way in, but he's claiming it!
Palermo claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 54 percent.
Palermo's best player was
D. Pipa.
J. Skružný was a disappointment, however.
G. Angius performed admirably for Carmine.
On the other hand,
R. Andreou's play was disheartening.
The match ends 3 - 1.
