A brilliantly sunny day had enticed a crowd of 29870 to
Ataturk.
Ioan Albu was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Mikoláš Rouček and
Koen Hazes.
A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Vespese.
Lineup: Calandrelli - Ruus, Komnenović, Betta - Telmo, Fill, Baldwin, Domi, Capobianco - Muti, Dubreil.
Maiolica started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
Starters: Furgone - Catalino, Vaccari, Milanov - Friggieri, Svensson, Turchi, Ladesma, Gaias - O'Donald, Carlsson.
Vespese used their ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings.
J. Svensson of Maiolica seemed to be floating in the air as he elegantly headed in to make the score 0 - 1 after a corner kick that was nicely executed by
G. Friggieri.
S. O'Donald's technique was perfect on this sunny day and led to some breathtaking tricks that bamboozled the defence.
With 21 minutes played, a quick exchange of passes on the left wing freed
G. Turchi of Maiolica to slip through the defence and score another goal for the visitors. That made the score 0 - 2.
Vespese's
P. Dubreil found himself alone on the left side 25 minutes into the match and laid down a perfect shot - right into the arms of the keeper!
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
S. Ladesma from Maiolica a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 27 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
The home crowd cheered when, after 30 minutes,
S. Ladesma's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day.
G. Friggieri was, after 35 minutes, almost able to extend the visitors' lead with a well placed diving header after the ball had looped into the centre, but the home side's keeper
C. Calandrelli made the save.
0 - 2 was the score after the first half.
Maiolica claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 57 percent.
Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Vespese's
F. Fill was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 70 minutes.
A. Orrù was given a chance to change things around.
L. Muti wasn't much help defensively. His energy-consuming forward runs proved quite costly in the oppressive heat.
After the ball was lifted in from the left,
G. Turchi was on his own in the home side's penalty area and should have scored after 85 minutes, but missed, probably due to lack of concentration.
Maiolica had most of the ball, with 63 percent of possession.
P. Dubreil performed admirably for Vespese.
However,
H. Ruus made a disastrous appearance.
Most important Maiolica player was
J. Svensson.
F. Furgone was a disappointment, however.
The match ends 0 - 2.
