It was obvious that Catania had instructions to attack on the wings instead of in the middle. B. Miranda increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley away after a pass from the right. 0 - 3. After the ball was lifted in from the left, T. Moura was on his own in the home side's penalty area and should have scored after 44 minutes, but missed, probably due to lack of concentration. It was 0 - 3 at the break. Catania claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 58 percent.

The referee showed Catania's G. Ravarotto the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. Fosco needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 60 minutes M. Madeira made way for X. Isern. A penalty was awarded after 61 minutes, and M. Lehtolainen made the most of his chance to put Catania up by another goal. 0 - 4 for the visitors. Confident in their lead, Catania's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. The bench was restless, and with 70 minutes passed Fosco's coach gave M.
