Overcast weather free of rain made for a crowd turnout of 12600 at
Stadio Olimpico Arechi today.
Krister Beckin was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Guido Quiroz and
Hannu Linkola.
Salernitana had chosen a strategic 3-4-3 formation.
The following players took the field: Squaiella - Greco, Barszczyk, Solbakken - Łączek, Matapozuelos, Brunott, Calandrelli - Tonbay, Müller, Shemesh.
Flames started off with a 4-3-3 lineup.
Starters: Breitkreuz - Hallbauer, Klanglius, Lambinon, Otondo - Mottola, Færgemann, Haragoş - Rivas, Kruijs, Lara.
Salernitana used their ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings.
At 11 minutes played,
F. Łączek came in from the right with the intention of giving Salernitana the lead, but his rocket of a shot rattled the crossbar.
A mistake by the home side's central defence after 18 minutes allowed
T. Rivas to score for Flames. The scoreboard now read 0 - 1.
Some fine movement on the left led to a Flames goal after 25 minutes, making it 0 - 2.
F. Haragoş was noted down as the scorer.
Salernitana's fans were urging them forward as they tried to get back into the game, and their vocal support was rewarded 26 minutes into the match as
A. Shemesh ran onto a beautiful ball played through the visitors' defence and slotted it past the keeper to reduce the deficit. 1 - 2.
The referee showed Flames's
E. Klanglius the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
F. Łączek charged down the left and had a wonderful opportunity to score the equaliser for Salernitana, but the shot went well wide of the goal.
The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 2.
This part of the game was a standoff between the teams in terms of possession.
T. Calandrelli made a superb strike after 47 minutes with a shot straight in front of the goal after a long ball through the middle, but one of the visitors' defenders got a foot in at the last second and warded it off for a corner.
I. Otondo received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 48 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 1 - 3. The Flames fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early.
Salernitana reduced the lead to 2 - 3 with 54 minutes on the clock when
T. Calandrelli got the best of a ball floated in from the left.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
C. Greco from Salernitana a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 57 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
T. Rivas increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley away after a pass from the right. 2 - 4.
Salernitana's
F. Łączek got himself booked for a foul.
A loud groan was heard from the fans of Flames, as
R. Breitkreuz left the pitch in too much pain to finish the match.
Y. Fasoulas took his place on the field.
As the captain was no longer on the pitch,
F. Haragoş took over the role of being the Flames captain.
75 minutes into the game, Flames worked the left side industriously creating several opportunities to add to their lead, but just couldn't apply the finishing touch.
Possession in this half belonged to Salernitana, who controlled the ball 51 percent of the time.
The most dominating Salernitana player was without a doubt
R. Müller.
G. Matapozuelos was a disappointment, however.
Flames's best player was
B. Færgemann.
On the other hand,
T. Lambinon's play was disheartening.
The match ends 2 - 4.
