60501 spectators arrived at
Zvezda Arena, where weather conditions were pretty good for football.
Atro Haltsonen was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Guillem Carrió and
Teodor Praxl.
Zvezda decided to use a 4-4-2 set up.
Lineup: Milano - Kupferstecher, Costas, Lemos, Scherk - Tuomi, Dubajić, Rubio López, Schifauer - Mauthner, Nordskov.
Smart had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation.
They fielded: Da Costa - Van den Bergh, Peterin, Ramírez - Landwald, Dobrnjac, Goršak, Caf, Kaňák - Avguštinčič, Smerdelj.
After 3 minutes of play,
T. Schifauer gave the home team a 1 - 0 lead after an attack coming in from the right.
The score became 2 - 0 at 4 minutes into the game, when Zvezda were given a penalty which
H. Tuomi blasted straight down the middle giving the keeper no chance!
Confident in their lead, Zvezda's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it.
After 10 minutes,
V. Avguštinčič sent the corner kick right to
Č. Kaňák who headed it sharply past the keeper. 2 - 1!
Smart had a magnificent opportunity after 31 minutes as
A. Goršak hit the ball hard from the edge of the penalty box. However, the shot went wide.
S. Smerdelj made a run for the goal 35 minutes into the game but the home team's left back managed to sort the situation out in the end.
Halftime score was 2 - 1.
Zvezda claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 56 percent.
A free kick just outside of the visitors' penalty area after 47 minutes could have resulted in another goal, but
M. Da Costa got a hand out and tipped the ball over the bar.
The Zvezda free kick 50 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of
L. Nordskov, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 3 - 1!
The Zvezda coach was visibly pleased with the score so far, but still ordered a few tactical changes 59 minutes into the game.
The Zvezda players could smell victory in the air.
L. Nordskov wasn't in a hurry to leave the field as he was substituted for
D. Mërtiri after 60 minutes.
Zvezda's
L. Scherk got himself booked for a foul.
In a fantastic display of determination, Smart's
Č. Kaňák forced himself to his feet, after an opponent viciously knocked him down.
After 75 minutes Smart's
V. Avguštinčič contracted a slight foot injury, but didn't want to leave the game.
H. Tuomi struck a 30 metre free kick home 77 minutes into the match. 4 - 1 for the home team.
M. Zalaznik was called on to replace Smart's
V. Avguštinčič after 78 minutes following a nasty collision.
Possession in this half belonged to Zvezda, who controlled the ball 56 percent of the time.
The most dominating Zvezda player was without a doubt
N. Dubajić.
D. Mërtiri turned in a dismal performance, however.
Smart's best player was
S. Smerdelj.
Č. Kaňák was a disappointment, however.
The match ends 4 - 1.
