Dark skies made the crowd of 45986 at
El Sardinero a little nervous, but the rain held off.
Jakub Musielak was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Carlo Frigerio and
Alberto Alvarez.
Cantabria had chosen a strategic 3-4-3 formation.
The following players had been chosen: Jeger - Loranco, Val, Giovanelli - Poggi, Morillo, Prada, Rocha - Huibers, Yahya, Özipek.
Euromijos started off with a 4-4-2 lineup.
The following players took the field: Rabaneda - Jiménez, Bolboceanu, Bonet, Dobao - Andersson, Stückler, Muñoz-León, Sawicz - Vigouroux, Ierino.
The wings were the focus of most of Cantabria's attacks today.
Euromijos clearly had decided to counter-attack when they could.
A well placed corner kick from
F. Vigouroux was followed by
S. Sawicz's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for Euromijos, the score now 0 - 1.
S. Sawicz came close to extending the visitors' lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle. He tried to lift the ball over
J. Jeger but overcooked it and hit the bar instead.
Cantabria were determined to attack on the wing and their central attempts were constantly abandoned in favour of the wings.
After 25 minutes,
J. Huibers got through on the right and was very close to equalising for the home side, but didn't get the shot away.
F. Bonet received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 30 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 0 - 2. The Euromijos fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early.
In a rapid move 32 minutes into the match,
G. Poggi of Cantabria lost his man and passed the ball to the unmarked
U. Yahya who easily hit it home to make it 1 - 2. Luckily the ref didn't see him taunting the opposing fans in celebration - naughty boy!
It was obvious that Cantabria had instructions to attack on the wings instead of in the middle.
With 33 minutes having been played, Cantabria scored to make it 2 - 2. A dribble down the left wing, followed by a shot which took a wicked bounce off a defender resulted in the keeper having no chance. Everyone thought it'd been an own goal, but
U. Yahya was marked down as the scorer.
The guests almost went up by a goal after 34 minutes when
J. Andersson came through and shot from the right. The ball bounced harmlessly off the post, though.
Halftime score was 2 - 2.
Possession in this half belonged to Cantabria, who controlled the ball 51 percent of the time.
A mistake by the home side's central defence after 70 minutes allowed
R. Muñoz-León to score for Euromijos. The scoreboard now read 2 - 3.
After 76 minutes, Euromijos's
P. Ierino burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 2 - 4.
Cantabria enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 52 percent of possession.
Most important Cantabria player was
U. Yahya.
However,
N. Giovanelli made a disastrous appearance.
Euromijos's best player was
P. Ierino.
F. Bonet on the other hand, had a terrible day.
The match ends 2 - 4.
