previous 5/10 next 7/10  Soldiers 4 - 2 Sants (383592886)

Dark skies made the crowd of 8397 at Trincheras catalanas a little nervous, but the rain held off. Stephane Bartmann was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Lech Muchowski and Nenad Bandić. All of Barcelona was shut down for the day, as fans of both clubs came to the derby. Soldiers started off with a 4-4-2 lineup. They fielded: Hernando - Oubiña, Virgil, Niubò, Herrera - Ingunza, Bassaganyes, Feo, Valladares - Garriga, Miranda.

Sants had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. The following players had been chosen: da Zamorela - Naves, Manzanares, Sáenz Adán, Cruzat - Pérez Bueno, Cosín, Sapé, Guasp - Elias, Moreno Camara.

Soldiers created a good opportunity to score 2 minutes into the match when A. Bassaganyes's hooked ball from the left created a scuffle in front of the goal, and the visitors' defenders had a hard time clearing the ball. Soldiers's F. Niubò left the field after 14 minutes because of a nasty blow to the shin. His replacement was L. Arenys. The home keeper expected a move to the right, but J. Naves surprised him with a free kick aimed the other way 20 minutes into the match. 0 - 1 for Sants. A well placed corner kick from C. Oubiña was followed by J. Garriga's hard but accurate header. The well executed routine resulted in a goal for Soldiers, the score now 1 - 1. After 31 minutes, A. Bassaganyes came in from the right, feinted, then sped past the off-balance defender to make the score 2 - 1, giving Soldiers the lead. A great save by keeper R. da Zamorela after 34 minutes kept the visitors in the game after D. Virgil struck from the left with a real cannonball. Things were going to get worse for the visitors. D. Virgil squirmed through their central defence after 38 minutes, increasing the lead to 3 - 1. 3 - 1 was the score after the first half. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Soldiers, with 57 percent of the ball.

Sants managed to reduce the score to 3 - 2 as A. Moreno Camara finished off a well-played combination from the left, easily carving through the defence. Soldiers managed to extend their lead to 4 - 2 when L. Arenys cut in neatly from the left side and struck a fine shot past the away team's goalkeeper. After several obvious shirt pulling incidents, A. Herrera got himself booked. The manager of Soldiers was not happy. Soldiers claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 57 percent.

The most dominating Soldiers player was without a doubt A. Bassaganyes. D. Virgil was a disappointment, however. Sants's best player was J. Elias. On the other hand, A. Guasp's play was disheartening. The match ends 4 - 2.
