A scorching day at
LDK UniteD Arena, where 49313 spectators were in place for today's match.
Gaffar Çile was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Cédric Mathieu and
Wilfred Henniphof.
A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for UNited.
The following players had been chosen: Podvoiskis - Farley, Larsen, Castelain, Nurkov - Narcisi, van Lunteren, Kollegger, Madureira - Rychel, Joniškāns.
Meilužis tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination.
Lineup: Waddell - van der Brand, Arreche, Lahtiranta - Mastihuba, Severi, Ringuet, Treinauskas, Tanskanen - Sekmokas, Krivopustas.
Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Meilužis.
G. van der Brand had a good try after 7 minutes, coming in on a fine move from the left, but the ball went wide.
With 17 minutes played, the home side managed to get a 1 - 0 lead as
P. Joniškāns flipped the ball in after a cross from the right.
G. Nurkov of UNited received a yellow card after 18 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
V. Madureira should probably have put his team up another goal after 23 minutes, but some great goalkeeping by
J. Waddell kept the visitors in the game.
Meilužis's
M. Severi was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 29 minutes.
UNited's
P. Joniškāns lived up to his reputation for finding unexpected ways to get the ball in the net when he sent a nifty little pass over to
A. Rychel who finished for 2 - 0 with 31 minutes of the match played.
G. Sekmokas was first to reach a ball launched long through the center from Meilužis's defence 38 minutes into the game. He managed to keep his cool and beat the goalkeeper to make the score 2 - 1.
G. Sekmokas enjoyed the sunshine and demonstrated his stunning technique over and over again.
The home side's
L. Castelain came close to extending the lead 40 minutes into the game. His shot came in from the right hand side but
J. Waddell managed to save it with an unbelievable reaction stop.
Having been awarded a free kick in an awkward position after 42 minutes, UNited did not go for a shot but instead fired the ball hard into the 6 yard box. After a brief tussle with his marker,
S. Farley was able to power the ball past the keeper to make the score 3 - 1.
After several obvious shirt pulling incidents,
A. Mastihuba got himself booked. The manager of Meilužis was not happy.
Halftime score was 3 - 1.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by UNited, with 66 percent of the ball.
Coming from the right,
R. van Lunteren almost managed to score another goal for UNited, but his header was tipped over the bar by the visitors' keeper.
G. van der Brand found it hard to catch his breath today in the stifling heat.
Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Meilužis's
P. Tanskanen was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 80 minutes.
J. Polukejevas was given a chance to change things around.
Things were deteriorating for the away team as UNited scored another to make it 4 - 1 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for
S. Larsen after 80 minutes.
With 83 minutes played, the Meilužis coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around.
J. Vienius came on,
A. Mastihuba had to leave the fray.
UNited were given a gift! The ref dubiously awarded them a penalty 83 minutes into the match, which was neatly put away by
A. Rychel. 5 - 1 for the home side.
R. Kollegger of UNited was booked for kicking the ball away after the whistle.
UNited enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 63 percent of possession.
UNited's best player was
S. Larsen.
However,
P. Podvoiskis made a disastrous appearance.
The most dominating Meilužis player was without a doubt
G. Ringuet.
G. van der Brand on the other hand, had a terrible day.
The match ends 5 - 1.
