Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 49965 to
Ali Dabaja Stadium.
András Török was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Daniel A. Göransson and
Menno Bergkamp.
A 5-2-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Torpedo.
Lineup: Kranzfelder - Visschers, Lübbing, Flennier, Görsel, Gatscha - Chaim, Dupond - Borriello, Khatami, Căţoi.
Tigers had chosen a strategic 2-5-3 formation.
They fielded: Jubileu - Landázuri, Vuillermoz - Ruda, Amitrani, Pezzali, Callinan, Lenbens - Pfundner, Höller, Stendal.
Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Torpedo.
Torpedo's
D. Căţoi was shown a yellow card after 3 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
Tigers's
G. Pfundner gave the visitors a 0 - 1 lead after 4 minutes with a superb strike from the right.
With 14 minutes played,
S. Pezzali nearly put the visitors another one up as he broke through in the middle and fired from just outside the box, but his shot passed just over the bar.
Torpedo almost scored after a counterattack 15 minutes into the match, but
P. Dupond took a shot from the left that landed harmlessly in the side of the net.
Speedy
M. Ruda tried one of his patented rushes 20 minutes into the game, but
D. Gatscha was just as fast and averted the attack.
A. Lenbens sailed high above the opponents as he headed in a corner kick from
G. Pfundner after 29 minutes of play, making the score 0 - 2.
Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Torpedo's
D. Căţoi was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 29 minutes.
G. Cronegg was given a chance to change things around.
After 31 minutes, a well-worked counterattack by Torpedo on the right presented an easy opportunity in front of the goal that was duly converted by
P. Dupond to make it 1 - 2.
1 - 2 was the halftime score.
Tigers had most of the ball, with 82 percent of possession.
The home crowd cheered when, after 53 minutes,
N. Callinan's charge up the middle resulted in the keeper making one of his best saves of the day.
A counterattack by Torpedo after 54 minutes could have resulted in a goal, but
A. Borriello, coming in on the left, couldn't get the shot off.
After 58 minutes, an incisive pass through the middle gave
A. Lenbens a chance to increase the lead for Tigers, and he did not disappoint. The score was then 1 - 3.
N. Callinan could have put his team up another goal 59 minutes into the game, after a rush down the left, but his closing shot hit the post.
F. Stendal came close to extending the visitors' lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle. He tried to lift the ball over
W. Kranzfelder but overcooked it and hit the bar instead.
After 66 minutes, the defensive line of Torpedo created a counterattack through the middle that gave
P. Dupond a good look at the goal, but his shot glanced harmlessly off the crossbar.
Had it not been for one of the home defenders,
A. Lenbens would have put Tigers up another goal 74 minutes into the match with his audacious lob from the right wing.
After 88 minutes, Torpedo switched
P. Dupond with
C. Buchen, hoping for a quick impact on the pitch.
The bench was restless, and with 89 minutes passed Torpedo's coach gave
L. Bura the opportunity the player had been hoping for.
C. Buchen reluctantly left the field.
Tigers claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 78 percent.
Most important Torpedo player was
A. Khatami.
A. Görsel turned in a dismal performance, however.
F. Stendal performed admirably for Tigers.
M. Jubileu on the other hand, had a terrible day.
The match ends 1 - 3.
