Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 26500 to
Van der Vaart Arena.
Martin-Ghislain Croux was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Bernhard Runk and
Samson Dupouy.
Toppi started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
Lineup: Camezzana - Puig, Viana, Mykrä - Marinescu, Fusco, Landi, Bijkerk, Kruspel - Raahauge, Deć.
Velbert tactics involved an interesting 5-3-2 combination.
Starters: Hervías - Wahrsow, Junker, Merkenich, Pallag, Ortells - Garfunkel, Petrović, Pereturin - Franchi, Myrling.
Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Velbert.
Toppi's
M. Bijkerk tried to break through in the middle repeatedly, but couldn't get past the visitors' defenders.
With 10 minutes played
O. Kruspel almost put the home team one ahead on a cross coming in from the right, but the shot went just wide.
After 11 minutes, a well-worked counterattack by Velbert on the right presented an easy opportunity in front of the goal that was duly converted by
S. Petrović to make it 0 - 1.
J. Viana sailed high above the opponents as he headed in a corner kick from
A. Marinescu after 16 minutes of play, making the score 1 - 1.
Toppi took the lead 25 minutes in, as
J. Mykrä broke through on the left and put the 2 - 1 shot just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper.
A. Marinescu should probably have put his team up another goal after 31 minutes, but some great goalkeeping by
T. Hervías kept the visitors in the game.
2 - 1 was the halftime score.
Toppi enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 68 percent of possession.
Toppi put in a good effort on the right, but
J. Viana saw his volley fly wide of the mark 56 minutes into the game.
A. Marinescu could have increased the lead after 65 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park.
S. Petrović was first to reach a ball launched long through the center from Velbert's defence 66 minutes into the game. He managed to keep his cool and beat the goalkeeper to make the score 2 - 2.
Toppi claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 68 percent.
The most dominating Toppi player was without a doubt
D. Raahauge.
O. Kruspel was a disappointment, however.
Velbert's top performer was clearly
A. Franchi.
G. Merkenich turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 2 - 2.
