18-08-2012 19.15
Clear skies welcomed the 43677 spectators who had made their way to
Dynamo White Maltese Arena.
Ian Chestnut was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Lars-Erik Hansson and
Aurélien Jacquet.
Maltesers started off with a 5-3-2 lineup.
The following players took the field: Shevlyakov - Grießl, Eilands, Favre, Vişan, Lebarten - Radu, Panzenböck, Bordron - Soffritti, Leisibach.
A 2-5-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Münchenstein.
The following players had been chosen: Marcon - Çebiç, Tonti - Goldstein, Merkler, Brasser, Crash, Weidkuhn - Jacquat, Rehdanz, Hockenheim.
Maltesers clearly had decided to counter-attack when they could.
The counterattacks of Maltesers were deadly and 7 minutes into the game,
R. Leisibach received a nice pass from the right flank, making it 1 - 0.
G. Soffritti stunned the crowd with a brilliant counterattack from the left, giving Maltesers the goal to make it 2 - 0.
By now, the players in Maltesers felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave
I. Radu from Maltesers a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 27 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient!
In a fantastic display of determination, Münchenstein's
E. Merkler forced himself to his feet, after an opponent viciously knocked him down.
After 32 minutes,
F. Bordron sent the corner kick right to
K. Eilands who headed it sharply past the keeper. 3 - 0!
Maltesers had a great opportunity to score following a counterattack after 34 minutes, but
F. Bordron's shot from the left sailed high over the bar.
It was 3 - 0 at the break.
Possession in this half belonged to Münchenstein, who controlled the ball 56 percent of the time.
With 48 minutes gone, a long pass from the defence of Maltesers resulted in a counterattack that set
C. Vişan free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save.
I. Radu had a fantastic opportunity to put Maltesers up another goal 51 minutes into the match, but he fired just over the crossbar.
I. Radu's lightning pace was too much for
E. Merkler who could only look on as the Maltesers player blasted one home. 4 - 0.
G. Soffritti could have increased the lead after 54 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park.
E. Hockenheim had a couple of good opportunities to reply, but the home team's keeper
N. Shevlyakov was simply unbeatable.
The crowd roared its approval when
N. Shevlyakov somehow managed to block a shot which seemed to be a certain goal by Münchenstein's
G. Crash 57 minutes into the game.
The coach of Maltesers was happy with the game so far, but still wanted to change the line up. After 80 minutes,
F. Simoni came on for
R. Leisibach.
Münchenstein claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 55 percent.
Maltesers's best player was
G. Soffritti.
On the other hand,
I. Radu's play was disheartening.
The most dominating Münchenstein player was without a doubt
G. Jacquat.
E. Goldstein turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 4 - 0.
