The 37917 spectators at
Satans Grill were in for an afternoon of sunshine.
Charles Curti was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Michael Kossina and
Amadeusz Pływacz.
A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Cardinal.
Lineup: Sierra - Kytöviita, Cucchiara, 鼎智 (Dingzhi) - Scholzhuber, Humarán, De Boodt, de la Fuente, Westrum - Blake, Canivet.
The lions started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
The following players took the field: Fašánok - Giachin, Mpezas, Pelzmann - Elhami, Godel, Siré, Pieringer, Steimer - Cicala, Ghiurca.
It was a hot and sunny day, and several players seemed worn out. Maybe this was why
C. Ghiurca found an unusual amount of space for his snappy footwork.
F. Siré came close to putting the visiting team one up 22 minutes into the match, following a solo raid down the middle, but
V. Sierra managed to tip the ball to a corner.
Making his way up the middle 24 minutes into the match,
M. Westrum almost managed to squeeze a goal past the visitors' keeper, but the alert
E. Fašánok blocked it to keep the score level.
Almost all the way down to the corner flag, The lions's
A. Steimer somehow managed to get a perfect pass into the middle, impossible to miss for
U. Cicala, who struck for 0 - 1.
After 36 minutes of play,
P. Cucchiara evened things up for Cardinal with an impressive goal coming up the middle. 1 - 1.
Cardinal's
A. de la Fuente refused to leave the field after injuring his achilles tendon after 38 minutes.
The lions's
C. Ghiurca gave the visitors a 1 - 2 lead after 40 minutes with a superb strike from the right.
Halftime score was 1 - 2.
The lions enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 59 percent of possession.
U. Cicala received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 55 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 1 - 3. The The lions fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early.
The players of The lions now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle.
C. Pelzmann of The lions seemed to be floating in the air as he elegantly headed in to make the score 1 - 4 after a corner kick that was nicely executed by
U. Cicala.
Content with how the game was proceeding, the The lions coach let
A. Ruhleben replace
W. Pieringer after 66 minutes.
V. Sierra got a fingertip on
A. Ruhleben's shot from the left 74 minutes in, and managed to keep the visitors from going up another goal.
Had it not been for one of the home defenders,
U. Cicala would have put The lions up another goal 78 minutes into the match with his audacious lob from the right wing.
It wasn't a good day at all for
É. Canivet. His powerful style of play just didn't fit the bill on this warm day.
83 minutes into the match, the visitors put themselves ahead 1 - 5 as
U. Cicala finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular scissors kick.
By then
U. Cicala had scored three goals - a hat trick!
U. Cicala left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 85 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead.
I. Paullin was the replacement.
The lions had most of the ball, with 60 percent of possession.
B. Blake performed admirably for Cardinal.
É. Canivet turned in a dismal performance, however.
Most important The lions player was
I. Paullin.
On the other hand,
D. Giachin's play was disheartening.
The match ends 1 - 5.
