previous 5/10 next 7/10  Glarus 3 - 1 Thurgau (384909505)

Clear skies welcomed the 23170 spectators who had made their way to Tödi Arena. Tõnu Väljaots was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Paco Casals and Giuseppe Di Giorgio. Glarus started off with a 4-5-1 lineup. The following players had been chosen: Vestuti - Dellenbach, Lausen, Dise, Settelen - Mühle, Schricker, Volmert, Regard, Pietronero - Egloff.

A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Thurgau. The following players took the field: Kondel - Banzato, bin Besar, Fokas - Gherzi, Lapouge, Knorr, Barbosa, Grove - Grossglauser, Schaffhauser.

With 7 minutes played, the home side managed to get a 1 - 0 lead as M. Volmert flipped the ball in after a cross from the right. With 27 minutes played, L. Schricker could have brought this one home for Glarus as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high. The Glarus free kick 29 minutes into the match seemed wasted, as the shot was both short and off target. But was this actually a plan? The ball landed at the feet of E. Egloff, who was completely unmarked in the box. That's 2 - 0! After this, you could see that the players of Glarus were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals. 2 - 0 was the score after the first half. Possession in this half belonged to Glarus, who controlled the ball 60 percent of the time.

Content with how the game was proceeding, the Glarus coach let S. Stoev replace J. Dise after 70 minutes. The referee showed Thurgau's H. bin Besar the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. J. Mühle was the unlucky victim and couldn't continue the game, so Glarus's F. Pereira had to come off the bench. After 82 minutes, Thurgau raised their score by one when O. Gherzi's dangerous low cross was cleverly tucked in at the near post by J. Schaffhauser. 2 - 1. A. Lausen wanted to play on, but the Glarus coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 83 minutes into the game by W. Schneble. With 83 minutes played, Glarus's well-worked indirect free kick caused havoc in the penalty area, and when the ball eventually fell to L. Regard he gleefully slotted the ball home to make it 3 - 1. Glarus claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 62 percent.

Most important Glarus player was M. Volmert. F. Pereira on the other hand, had a terrible day. The most dominating Thurgau player was without a doubt R. Grossglauser. However, E. Grove made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 3 - 1.
