previous 1/4 next 3/4  Liechtenstein 1 - 0 Zug (385440620)

7000 spectators had come to Liechtenstein Stadion this cloudy day. Erhard Hackl was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Francesco Bertocchi and Karsten Dahlberg. Liechtenstein had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. They fielded: Läuppi - Pleisch, Breu, Veneberg, Wanzenried - Comisetti, Cerri, Brülisauer, Bezzi - Hilding, Schlaning.

Zug tactics involved an interesting 4-4-2 combination. Lineup: Borner - Kienberger, Freuler, Bailleux, Viot - Enz, Prêtre, Streng, Paullin - Wehinger, Le Brun.

Liechtenstein's B. Pleisch was shown a yellow card after 17 minutes for slicing down an opponent. J. Läuppi looked great 22 minutes into the match after stopping a shot from the middle of the penalty area from the visitors' L. Streng. Liechtenstein could have put themselves ahead after 25 minutes but N. Bezzi missed a volley shot on a ball coming in from the right. V. Veneberg received some harsh words from his coach after he acted foolishly 32 minutes into the match, probably out of lack of experience, and almost let an opponent score. A free kick aimed at the keeper's far post almost gave Zug the lead 38 minutes in, but the ball just wasn't able to squirm its way through the defensive wall. 41 minutes into the game, A. Prêtre almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. 0 - 0 was the halftime score. Zug enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 54 percent of possession.

With 80 minutes played E. Comisetti almost put the home team one ahead on a cross coming in from the right, but the shot went just wide. Liechtenstein broke through on the left 85 minutes into the game, with R. Breu firing in from an acute angle to give the home side a 1 - 0 lead. Possession in this half belonged to Zug, who controlled the ball 53 percent of the time.

Most important Liechtenstein player was H. Wanzenried. V. Veneberg on the other hand, had a terrible day. W. Enz performed admirably for Zug. J. Borner turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 1 - 0.
