previous 1/4 next 3/4  Villeneuve 2 - 4 Besac (386142356)

The 11027 fans in attendance at Villeneuve FC Arena were roasting in the hot sun. Willy Martin was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Finn Langberg and Stanley Mcneal. Villeneuve tactics involved an interesting 4-4-2 combination. The following players took the field: Pétris - Dumetz, Clément, Minart, Bourez - Bouquin, Brieu, Hervé, Bigot - Bevière, Verdier.

Besac decided to use a 4-4-2 set up. Starters: Benard - Boix, Vidot, Guironnet, Demeure - Martinod, Ben Neji, Dechelette, Tabane - Prieur, Robelin.

This was a good period for the visitors, with several opportunities to take the lead, particularly when A. Martinod slipped through the defence on the right to come up alone against J. Pétris, but the home side's keeper showed his lightning reflexes. The terraces were silenced after 22 minutes when Besac's A. Prieur put the guests ahead 0 - 1, following an attack on the right. After 30 minutes, A. Boix sent the corner kick right to M. Guironnet who headed it sharply past the keeper. 0 - 2! Villeneuve refused to be intimidated and, breaking through the middle, S. Bevière managed to slip the ball home for 1 - 2. After 35 minutes of play, N. Bouquin evened things up for Villeneuve with an impressive goal coming up the middle. 2 - 2. Besac's goal to make the score 2 - 3 came via a questionable penalty, but A. Boix struck it home without a second thought. 2 - 3 was the halftime score. Villeneuve claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 54 percent.

It was a hot and sunny day, and several players seemed worn out. Maybe this was why A. Boix found an unusual amount of space for his snappy footwork. Villeneuve's J. Verdier almost tied things up with 78 minutes played after breaking through on the right, but his shot deflected off the post. The visitors added to their lead 80 minutes into the game, after a sensational penalty kick by Besac's A. Boix slid just past the home keeper. 2 - 4. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Villeneuve, with 57 percent of the ball.

Villeneuve's best player was S. Bevière. J. Pétris on the other hand, had a terrible day. Most important Besac player was Y. Tabane. However, J. Benard made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 2 - 4.
