previous 6/10 next 8/10  Yugoslavia 0 - 0 SVK (386977369)

49216 punters turned up at Stadion Maršala Tita, and despite threatening clouds on the horizon, no rain came. Axel Verin was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Maurice Chevallier and Ricardo Alves. Yugoslavia decided to use a 5-3-2 set up. Lineup: Dobrovolský - Habets, Nedeljković, Stošić, Sethi, Budisavljević - Žerak, Nanotti, Micalizzi - Ruiz, Mitre.

SVK tactics involved an interesting 4-4-2 combination. The following players took the field: Saavedra - Škoro, Adamson, Kézdy, Lakić - Madajewski, Gargan, Paits, Forestan - Silini, Šupinský.

Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Yugoslavia. For their match strategy, SVK had decided to use their ability to counter-attack whenever possible. SVK's counterattacks created a good chance for R. Škoro on the right after 12 minutes, but he could only look on with dismay as his strike rebounded off the crossbar. Good work by the SVK defensive line after 24 minutes produced a good counterattack chance, which cut elegantly down the middle of the pitch and found P. Šupinský alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide. 31 minutes into the game, M. Silini almost gave the visitors the lead, as he clipped a delicate lob over the keeper, but the ball glanced harmlessly off the crossbar. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave A. Nanotti from Yugoslavia a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 34 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! SVK were forced into a substitution as R. Paits couldn't continue due to some rough treatment, forcing J. Brasher to come in off the bench. 0 - 0 was the score after the first half. Yugoslavia enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 61 percent of possession.

Yugoslavia had a good opportunity to take the lead as B. Ruiz came up the left side, but he struck the ball weakly and it went straight into the arms of H. Saavedra. With 70 minutes gone, M. Silini suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing when a counterattack by SVK caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. 80 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a SVK substitution. C. Marqués came on for R. Škoro. W. Madajewski would have preferred to play on, but his coach decided otherwise. M. Wajwakana entered the game for SVK as the match clock showed 81 minutes. Yugoslavia's A. Budisavljević was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 86 minutes. X. Mitre's speed was almost enough to give Yugoslavia a goal after 89 minutes, but his nice pass to B. Ruiz was not taken care of properly. Yugoslavia claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 55 percent.

Most important Yugoslavia player was M. Sethi. However, X. Mitre made a disastrous appearance. SVK's best player was M. Silini. J. Kézdy turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 0 - 0.
