Clouds darkened the skies at
The Cradle of Civilisation as 61171 spectators turned up for the match.
Hubert Le Bohec was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Ronald Kapitein and
Edmund Nasiłowski.
Gozo started off with a 3-4-3 lineup.
The following players took the field: Aust - Ulldemolins, Pefanis, Klein-Ruditzdorff - Lituma, Martin, Barboni, Galimberti - Wormhoudt, Costin, Bullerdieck.
Ockers had chosen a strategic 4-5-1 formation.
Starters: Barcos - Criades, Gill, Alfaia, Marsden - Erman, Renouard, Dürkop, Ehlberg, Thijssen - Atzpodien.
Ockers tried to focus their attacks down the middle.
Making his way up the middle 22 minutes into the match,
P. Lituma almost managed to squeeze a goal past the visitors' keeper, but the alert
J. Barcos blocked it to keep the score level.
I. Erman was in the clear after breaking the offside trap following a Ockers counterattack from the left after 23 minutes. His neat finish made the score 0 - 1.
With a shot curled in from just outside the middle of the penalty area after 26 minutes played,
P. Lituma of Gozo made the score 1 - 1.
1 - 2 was the score with 32 minutes played, after
R. Ehlberg cut through the central defence and chipped home a goal for Ockers.
Gozo were awarded a penalty with 33 minutes played, and
P. Lituma made no mistake as he effortlessly slotted the equaliser home. 2 - 2.
Gozo had a chance to take the lead after
D. Wormhoudt's dazzling drive up the left, but the opportunity fizzled out as his shot went just over the bar after 34 minutes.
R. Klein-Ruditzdorff was ever so close to scoring after an excellent corner was beautifully flicked on by
E. Barboni, but the ball bounced off the post to safety.
The referee showed Gozo's
A. Ulldemolins the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
2 - 2 was the halftime score.
Gozo claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 58 percent.
After 47 minutes, Ockers put themselves up 2 - 3, as
F. Atzpodien finished off a strike from the left with a real cannonball of a shot.
After 60 minutes of play,
D. Wormhoudt evened things up for Gozo with an impressive goal coming up the middle. 3 - 3.
The visitors' central defence should have had no trouble clearing the pass to
K. Bullerdieck, but the Gozo player managed to shrug them off and fired a low shot past the keeper to give his team the lead. 4 - 3!
M. Dürkop of Ockers received a yellow card after 68 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
After 69 minutes a very unfortunate collision in the penalty area led to Ockers's
M. Marsden being carried off the pitch and replaced by
J. Woodbury.
A late sliding challenge from
M. Dürkop was deemed to be his second yellow card offence by the referee, resulting in him being sent off, and Ockers left a man down.
The player down was
D. Wormhoudt. The Gozo bench looked worried for a while, but in the end he managed to get up.
E. Barboni unleashed a swerving effort from the right that the visitors' keeper did well to tip wide.
D. Costin had a fantastic opportunity to put Gozo up another goal 80 minutes into the match, but he fired just over the crossbar.
Gozo enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 65 percent of possession.
A. Martin performed admirably for Gozo.
E. Aust was a disappointment, however.
Ockers's best player was
F. Atzpodien.
J. Woodbury on the other hand, had a terrible day.
