Weather conditions were fairly good for football, and
Jugs-a-beer Stadium saw a crowd turnout of 12000.
Dharmavadhana Singh was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Gerhard Köllerer and
Frank Tobiasson.
A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Jugs.
The following players took the field: Hay - Koenig, Heesterman, Hogan, Ilić - Angelico, Fisher, Te Whetu, Lubich - Turnbull, Washbrook.
Menai had chosen a strategic 5-4-1 formation.
Starters: Dellac - Gilchrist, Bichot, Chiacchio, Stirmlinger, Ameller - Schulp, Jack, Pumarino, Michaleas - Sansone.
It was an obvious ambition of Menai to use their ability at attacking on the flanks.
After 6 minutes, Menai's
D. Chiacchio made his way through the middle and nonchalantly placed the ball out of the keeper's reach, putting the visitors up 0 - 1.
12 minutes into the game, Menai were awarded a penalty and
J. Schulp was able to increase the visitors' lead to 0 - 2 rolling the ball in by the right post.
Jugs's
K. Hay left the field after 14 minutes because of a nasty blow to the shin. His replacement was
M. Petković.
A drive down the left side allowed
O. Sansone to get in close and score another goal for Menai after 16 minutes, taking the score to 0 - 3.
After this, you could see that the players of Menai were more interested in killing time than scoring more goals.
After 26 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for
O. Sansone who increased Menai's lead to 0 - 4.
After 30 minutes, an incisive pass through the middle gave
F. Ameller a chance to increase the lead for Menai, and he did not disappoint. The score was then 0 - 5.
The teams went for the halftime break at 0 - 5.
Menai had most of the ball, with 81 percent of possession.
D. Jack dispatched a majestic long shot 47 minutes into the match, but missed the goal by a few metres.
Some things can only be learned through experience, and
F. Ameller should take his lesson to heart after nearly gifting Jugs a goal with 59 minutes of the match played.
T. Bichot increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley away after a pass from the right. 0 - 6.
The referee showed Menai's
D. Jack the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
O. Sansone came close to extending the visitors' lead when he found himself completely unmarked in front of the goal after a pass through the middle. He tried to lift the ball over
M. Petković but overcooked it and hit the bar instead.
After 74 minutes, Menai's
R. Gilchrist burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 0 - 7.
J. Schulp of Menai took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 75 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 0 - 8.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Menai, with 84 percent of the ball.
Most important Jugs player was
V. Turnbull.
However,
J. Koenig made a disastrous appearance.
O. Sansone performed admirably for Menai.
D. Chiacchio turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 0 - 8.
