Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 12000 to The Oval. Albert-Michael Kainhofer was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Zdzisław Litkowiec and Zahid Abbas. A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for GLENTORAN1882. Starters: Pillay - Tupou, Monroe, Watts, Wheeler - Rees, Stringer, Panopoulos, Benham - Huzzard, Fisher.

Geelong took a creative approach on the field. Almost all the way down to the corner flag, Geelong's A. Huguenin somehow managed to get a perfect pass into the middle, impossible to miss for V. Lupu, who struck for 0 - 1. After 5 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for A. Huguenin who increased Geelong's lead to 0 - 2. Having been awarded a free kick in an awkward position after 8 minutes, Geelong did not go for a shot but instead fired the ball hard into the 6 yard box. After a brief tussle with his marker, V. Lupu was able to power the ball past the keeper to make the score 0 - 3. Confident in their lead, Geelong's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. J. Downer of Geelong took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 18 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 0 - 4. With 29 minutes played, Geelong's well-worked indirect free kick caused havoc in the penalty area, and when the ball eventually fell to V. Lupu he gleefully slotted the ball home to make it 0 - 5. By then V. Lupu had scored three goals - a hat trick! Geelong's V. Lupu was shown a yellow card for standing over the ball and blocking an opponent's quick free kick after 36 minutes. Halftime score was 0 - 5. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Geelong, with 80 percent of the ball.

The visitors' A. Huguenin took advantage of a misunderstanding between the home side's goalie and centre backs 49 minutes into the match. 0 - 6 for Geelong. P. Lazarovski left the field with a smile on his face as he was substituted 65 minutes into the game, as his team was in the lead. K. Marat was the replacement. V. Lupu knew he was in trouble after hacking down an opponent. Despite his pleading with the referee, the Geelong player was shown a second yellow card and dismissed from the game. After the ball was lifted in from the left, F. zur Verth was on his own in the home side's penalty area and should have scored after 71 minutes, but missed, probably due to lack of concentration. Geelong increased their lead after 79 minutes when F. zur Verth broke through on the right, upping the score to 0 - 7, much to the home crowd's dismay. 80 minutes into the game, Geelong were awarded a penalty and A. Shilovskiy was able to increase the visitors' lead to 0 - 8 rolling the ball in by the right post. With 83 minutes played, S. Simčič of Geelong fell dramatically just outside the penalty area. However, the referee was unimpressed, and booked him for diving. 84 minutes into the match, A. Shilovskiy came through the middle and almost added to his team's lead, but the shot went wide. Geelong had most of the ball, with 84 percent of possession.

GLENTORAN1882's top performer was clearly V. Watts. J. Pillay turned in a dismal performance, however. Most important Geelong player was A. Shilovskiy. K. Marat was a disappointment, however. The match ends 0 - 8.
