The weather was pretty good, and a crowd of 5556 had shown up at The Cage for the match. Heinz Friedrichswahl was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Cyril Drouard and Manfred Bauernhansl. Szczęki decided to use a 4-4-2 set up. Bydgoszcz started off with a 4-4-2 lineup. They fielded: Kuśnierewicz - Przyłęcki, Darmetko, Pracz, Księżarczyk - Jabłoński, Franek, Wojcias, Zhovtyj - Kałek, Lisiak.

V. Zhovtyj came close to putting the visiting team one up 6 minutes into the match, following a solo raid down the middle, but P. Zwierzyński managed to tip the ball to a corner. Szczęki's J. Bastiok had a good first touch on the flank, but was crowded and, after a change of plan, sent the ball to K. Bartelski who somehow managed to curl the ball wide. Bydgoszcz took the lead 15 minutes into the game, making the score 0 - 1 after some elegant movement down the middle. V. Zhovtyj was the scorer. M. Księżarczyk could have put his team up another goal 37 minutes into the game, after a rush down the left, but his closing shot hit the post. M. Wojcias of Bydgoszcz took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 38 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 0 - 2. After 39 minutes a combination in the middle resulted in a through ball for M. Pracz who increased Bydgoszcz's lead to 0 - 3. 0 - 3 was the score after the first half. Bydgoszcz claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 75 percent.

49 minutes into the match, the visitors put themselves ahead 0 - 4 as M. Franek finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular scissors kick. By now, the players in Bydgoszcz felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward. Bydgoszcz's S. Jabłoński made it through the home team's defence on the right hand side 67 minutes into the match. After rounding the keeper, he only had to place the ball in the unguarded goal when a defender slid in and cleared the ball off the line. With 68 minutes played, Bydgoszcz put themselves up 0 - 5 after an attack from the right, caused by a defensive blunder. The scorer was M. Franek. After 71 minutes, a mistake by the home side's left defence allowed W. Lisiak to get through. He outclassed the home side's keeper, adding another goal for the visitors. 0 - 6. Bydgoszcz had most of the ball, with 77 percent of possession.

Szczęki's top performer was clearly M. Błąd. A. Kreis turned in a dismal performance, however. Most important Bydgoszcz player was W. Lisiak. M. Księżarczyk was a disappointment, however. The match ends 0 - 6.
