previous 10/10 next 2/10  Başkent 2 - 5 Modelaj (389012625)

Clouds darkened the skies at AnkaraGücü as 12000 spectators turned up for the match. Sébastien Colin was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Mattias Pettersson and Maxime Pollet. A 2-5-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Başkent. Starters: Mateevici - Valdés, Bilić - Vardopoulos, Hawk, Davidsson, Melen, Delfin - Colpin, Rafanelli, Szulczyński.

Modelaj tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. Lineup: Barda - Savio, Niininen, Martín - Sempio Liverta, Kangasmäki, Madge, Öncül, Metin - Barnier, Verkerck.

After a fine move down the middle O. Hawk nearly gave the home side a goal after 29 minutes. However the finishing shot went just wide. With 32 minutes played, the visitors broke through on the right after some poor defending. E. Niininen put the ball away for 0 - 1. M. Szulczyński showed the skills that make him a real crowd pleaser as he, after 33 minutes, wove through the guests' entire central defence and put the 1 - 1 equaliser away. Modelaj took the lead after 34 minutes making the score 1 - 2. C. Barnier placed the ball out of reach for the home side's keeper after a fine move, coming in from the left. 39 minutes into the match, the visitors put themselves ahead 1 - 3 as M. Kangasmäki finished off an attack from the left with a spectacular scissors kick. 1 - 3 was the halftime score. Possession in this half belonged to Modelaj, who controlled the ball 52 percent of the time.

Başkent's C. Valdés's long shot really ought to have found the net 57 minutes into the match, but it fell just wide of the target. C. Barnier increased the visitors' lead by putting a volley away after a pass from the right. 1 - 4. Confident in their lead, Modelaj's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. With 62 minutes played, R. Rafanelli was very close to reducing the score for Başkent with a low drive from the left, but a defender stuck his foot out just in the nick of time, blocking the shot to a corner. The home crowd was given a certain amount of consolation when R. Rafanelli scored after a brilliant midfield combination through the centre, reducing the lead to 2 - 4. Modelaj's E. Martín was shown a yellow card after 78 minutes for slicing down an opponent. The home side worked their way through the middle and almost got one back when M. Melen tried to sneak the ball past the keeper. A. Barda was too alert for that! G. Öncül knocked one home from a counterattack down the right wing, making the score 2 - 5 after 86 minutes. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Modelaj, with 55 percent of the ball.

Başkent's best player was G. Colpin. On the other hand, M. Melen's play was disheartening. The most dominating Modelaj player was without a doubt M. Verkerck. A. Barda turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 2 - 5.
