previous 7/10 next 9/10  Spartans 1 - 1 Sous-marin (389261871)

Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 12000 to Cilli's Spartans Arena. Vlatko Stepic was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Matías Gabriel Destefanis and Jamie van der Made. Fans of both teams had been eagerly awaiting this Kampala derby and were doing their best to outshout their opponents. Spartans had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. Lineup: Bukenya - Balam, Birungi, Augustine, Masaba - Obua, Ogora, Kiriggwajjo, Isegawa - Museveni, Nyaulawa.

A 4-4-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Sous-marin. The following players took the field: Kayizi - Bajope, Makalama, Player, Lule - Otim, Oryema-Lalobo, Seguya, Mwisaka - Odoch, Lamwaka.

Sous-marin were able to mount several counterattacks, such as the impressive one after 33 minutes, but D. Bajope lofted a free kick over the crossbar. 41 minutes into the game, H. Oryema-Lalobo finished off a Sous-marin left wing counterattack, making the score 0 - 1. 0 - 1 was the halftime score. Spartans had most of the ball, with 63 percent of possession.

Given a free kick close to the byline, Spartans tried a move that loyal fans may recognise from training. A pass to the side pulled the defence out of position which let G. Nyaulawa slip through on goal. He didn't have to break his stride, and slipped the ball past the keeper to make it 1 - 1, 72 minutes into the game. After 74 minutes Spartans's K. Isegawa contracted a slight foot injury, but didn't want to leave the game. C. Ogora received some harsh words from his coach after he acted foolishly 78 minutes into the match, probably out of lack of experience, and almost let an opponent score. Given a free kick in a difficult position after 79 minutes, Sous-marin tried a variation that they had practised in training. The kick was sent into the area just in front of the keeper. However, the defence were on their toes and allowed no space for a finish. Some great play up the middle by Spartans led to a chance for C. Ogora to score after 84 minutes, but the shot hit the crossbar. The opposing supporters gave the referee an earful when he only gave F. Seguya from Sous-marin a yellow card after a mistimed challenge from behind 86 minutes into the game. That was far too lenient! Spartans enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 62 percent of possession.

Most important Spartans player was R. Birungi. P. Bukenya on the other hand, had a terrible day. Sous-marin's best player was R. Odoch. However, N. Lamwaka made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 1 - 1.
