previous 3/4 next 1/4  Arsenal 1 - 4 Irane (389279344)

33040 spectators arrived at Ashburton grove, where weather conditions were pretty good for football. Daniele Oriani was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Arnold Quillet and Horst Kraxner. Arsenal tactics involved an interesting 3-5-2 combination. They fielded: Pürenvar - Czajko, Gaál, Ghezzi - Denizot, de Freitas, Valenzuela Pineda, Branchitta, Cuc - Gehringer, Gacitua.

Irane started off with a 3-5-2 lineup. The following players took the field: Campos - Tošić, Arienti, Michenthaler - Beu, Kia Shemshaki, Pourahmad, Tarnawski, Azarfar - Sangiorgi, Podsiadły.

Arsenal clearly had decided to counter-attack when they could. At 9 minutes played, M. Cuc came in from the right with the intention of giving Arsenal the lead, but his rocket of a shot rattled the crossbar. After 20 minutes Arsenal's N. Branchitta contracted a slight foot injury, but didn't want to leave the game. A. Podsiadły came close to putting the visiting team one up 23 minutes into the match, following a solo raid down the middle, but S. Pürenvar managed to tip the ball to a corner. 0 - 1 was the score with 29 minutes played, after G. Sangiorgi cut through the central defence and chipped home a goal for Irane. 0 - 1 was the score after the first half. Irane claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 61 percent.

The home crowd was not impressed when K. Beu came in from the right, shooting hard to score after 53 minutes. Irane were now up 0 - 2. After 56 minutes, M. Cuc sent the corner kick right to F. Ghezzi who headed it sharply past the keeper. 1 - 2! After 57 minutes, a mistake by the home side's left defence allowed A. Azarfar to get through. He outclassed the home side's keeper, adding another goal for the visitors. 1 - 3. Having turned the direction of play quickly, the Arsenal counter attack ended as the ball carrier was brought down violently by a defender after 72 minutes. The resulting free kick was a flat shot into the area just in front of the keeper. However, the defence were on their toes and did not allow the opponents to reach the ball. Some fine movement on the left led to a Irane goal after 75 minutes, making it 1 - 4. A. Tošić was noted down as the scorer. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Irane, with 64 percent of the ball.

J. Czajko performed admirably for Arsenal. J. de Freitas turned in a dismal performance, however. Irane's best player was G. Sangiorgi. However, A. Azarfar made a disastrous appearance. The match ends 1 - 4.
