previous 2/10 next 4/10  Wycombe 5 - 2 GPA (390050620)

Overcast weather free of rain made for a crowd turnout of 53532 at White Hot Lane Stadium today. Rui Alexandre Rodrigues was the appointed referee. Wycombe had chosen a strategic 2-5-3 formation. Starters: Chontos - Worwąg, Staab - Palermo, Castela, Luu, Sgouros, Callegati - Holland, Kukuruzović, Mullenders.

GPA started off with a 5-3-2 lineup. The following players had been chosen: Beagrie - Ali, Ibarburou, Butcher, Broadway, Ketteringham - Vasile, Reviş, Hendriks - Borggard, Van Eyken.

GPA were relying on their ability to counter-attack. D. Hendriks of GPA seemed to be floating in the air as he elegantly headed in to make the score 0 - 1 after a corner kick that was nicely executed by S. Reviş. Wycombe's W. Sgouros put his head to a well placed ball, lifted in from the left, and scored to make the score 1 - 1 with 5 minutes showing on the scoreboard clock. After some beautiful movement down the left wing, W. Sgouros scored for Wycombe putting them ahead 2 - 1, after 17 minutes. Against a lesser team, Wycombe could very well have succeeded with their smart indirect free kick routine after 21 minutes. A trio of passes took the ball all the way past the defenders, but by then the intended recipient was already blocked off and the keeper could make a leisurely save. 2 - 1 was the score after the first half. Wycombe had most of the ball, with 72 percent of possession.

W. Sgouros increased the lead for Wycombe to 3 - 1, getting a head onto a hooked ball from the right. The ball looked to have taken a deflection on the way in, but he's claiming it! That made three goals for W. Sgouros and he was marked down for the hat trick. Confident in their lead, Wycombe's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it. A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in Wycombe's T. Holland increasing the lead to 4 - 1. C. Vasile showed why he is feared on the counterattack, breaking through in the middle and scoring for GPA after 67 minutes to make the score 4 - 2. GPA's G. Ketteringham got himself booked for a foul. 82 minutes into the match, the visitors' central line of defence had to look on as D. Mullenders broke through, making the score 5 - 2 for Wycombe. Coming from the right, T. Holland almost managed to score another goal for Wycombe, but his header was tipped over the bar by the visitors' keeper. Wycombe enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 72 percent of possession.

Wycombe's top performer was clearly Č. Kukuruzović. On the other hand, L. Chontos's play was disheartening. Most important GPA player was G. Ali. R. Butcher turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 5 - 2.
