53715 spectators had come to
Theatre of wet dreams this cloudy day.
Eno Pula was the appointed referee.
Moggies decided to use a 3-5-2 set up.
They fielded: Iñigo-Ruiz - Schröder, Esperto, Crosia - Picanyol, Pomanyons, Silini, Larraona, Timperman - Abella, Küfner.
Auckland started off with a 2-5-3 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Kankaanniemi - Radcliffe, Pittard - Milner, Homer, Eames, Richards, Spendlove - Wick, Westray, Barker Jones.
Moggies were very close to putting themselves one up after 9 minutes as
H. Küfner got through on the left, but failing in concentration, he shot the ball wide.
Moggies took the lead 27 minutes into the game by 1 - 0, as
I. Silini elegantly received a long range pass through the middle, finishing off with a half-volley shot just below the bar.
The visitors didn't give in and, after 31 minutes,
G. Eames got through the home side's central line of defence, rolling in the equaliser to make it 1 - 1.
At 35 minutes played,
H. Küfner came in from the right with the intention of giving Moggies the lead, but his rocket of a shot rattled the crossbar.
Moggies's
Q. Abella refused to leave the field after injuring his achilles tendon after 36 minutes.
1 - 1 was the score after the first half.
Moggies enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 60 percent of possession.
With 50 minutes played, the home side managed to get a 2 - 1 lead as
H. Küfner flipped the ball in after a cross from the right.
Things were deteriorating for the away team as Moggies scored another to make it 3 - 1 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for
H. Küfner after 62 minutes.
After 66 minutes,
H. Küfner sent the corner kick right to
G. Esperto who headed it sharply past the keeper. 4 - 1!
By now, the players in Moggies felt that victory was guaranteed and began to play it safe, focusing on defence and not risking too much going forward.
Moggies's
E. Schröder saw his fine effort strike the top of the bar following some good work up the middle by his teammates after 71 minutes.
Auckland reduced the lead after 73 minutes to 4 - 2 as
R. Barker Jones easily chipped the ball past the home side's keeper after a dazzling play from the right.
Moggies's
Q. Abella was shown a yellow card after 74 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
Unfortunately for Auckland,
O. Milner was injured when the game became more physical, and he had to leave the field.
T. Cumberworth replaced him.
J. Larraona could have increased the lead after 76 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park.
80 minutes into the game, Auckland's attack got through on the right, but
J. Homer couldn't handle the ball and his feeble kick wound up in the keeper's arms.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Moggies, with 59 percent of the ball.
H. Küfner performed admirably for Moggies.
F. Crosia was a disappointment, however.
The most dominating Auckland player was without a doubt
B. Wick.
On the other hand,
R. Radcliffe's play was disheartening.
The match ends 4 - 2.
