olimpia Arena, and despite threatening clouds on the horizon, no rain came.
Gert Loozen was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Stefano Solinas and
Gaudijus Šlamiškis.
LECH decided to use a 4-4-2 set up.
Starters: Trenev - Halay, Woodland, Tarantini, Basa - Tierney, Tangalanga, Fariza, Radoła - Kilger, Thörnsten.
A 3-4-3 alignment was the formation of choice for Mattrid.
They fielded: Peláez - Huikari, Lázaro, Urošević - Forward, Planitz, Kimel, Franks - Manning, Caille, Gargioni.
For their match strategy, LECH had decided to use their ability to counter-attack whenever possible.
At 10 minutes played,
C. Thörnsten came in from the right with the intention of giving LECH the lead, but his rocket of a shot rattled the crossbar.
11 minutes into the game,
O. Lázaro finished off a Mattrid left wing counterattack, making the score 0 - 1.
B. Forward received a delicate pass through the home side's central defence after 13 minutes, and chipped it past the flailing keeper to score making it 0 - 2. The Mattrid fans went wild, whilst the home fans started to think about leaving early.
The visitors added to their lead 14 minutes into the game, after a sensational penalty kick by Mattrid's
J. Kimel slid just past the home keeper. 0 - 3.
The players of Mattrid now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle.
LECH supporters cheered as good work down the right got the ball to
L. Kilger who reduced the visitors' lead after 18 minutes to 1 - 3.
19 minutes in, Mattrid's
K. Franks received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first.
After 23 minutes, Mattrid's
K. Franks burst through the central defence and let loose a cannonball of a shot, scoring for 1 - 4.
With 29 minutes gone, a long pass from the defence of LECH resulted in a counterattack that set
L. Kilger free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save.
1 - 4 was the halftime score.
Mattrid enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 57 percent of possession.
Content with how the game was proceeding, the Mattrid coach let
M. Noad replace
K. Manning after 46 minutes.
A. Radoła almost reduced the deficit, having drawn the entire left side defence away, but the shot went straight into the arms of the goalkeeper.
The referee showed LECH's
C. Thörnsten the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge.
N. Fariza of LECH received a yellow card after 84 minutes for unsportsmanlike behaviour.
After 87 minutes Mattrid nearly put themselves up another goal from a penalty taken by
J. Kimel, but the keeper made an unbelievable save.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Mattrid, with 58 percent of the ball.
P. Tangalanga performed admirably for LECH.
H. Trenev on the other hand, had a terrible day.
Most important Mattrid player was
Q. Caille.
O. Lázaro turned in a dismal performance, however.
