previous 5/10 next 7/10  paignton 4 - 0 swindon (390110553)

Clear skies welcomed the 28911 spectators who had made their way to Winner Hill. Klement Verner was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Alberto Romero and Atte Laiho. paignton decided to use a 3-5-2 set up. Starters: Stoehr - Palacios, Aldasoro, Giglietti - Barreto, Inches, Tellegen, Glansbeek, Beccari - Caneva, Kursa.

swindon had chosen a strategic 4-4-2 formation. Lineup: Cooke - Harrison, Foley, Leonard, Weston - Millard, Samuels, Stockley, Morley - Bohan, Purba.

B. Kursa caused the crowd to go mental with his goal up the middle after 9 minutes. This gave paignton the 1 - 0 lead. The home side's J. Inches came close to extending the lead 18 minutes into the game. His shot came in from the right hand side but E. Cooke managed to save it with an unbelievable reaction stop. Things were deteriorating for the away team as paignton scored another to make it 2 - 0 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for P. Caneva after 30 minutes. E. Glansbeek unleashed a swerving effort from the right that the visitors' keeper did well to tip wide. 2 - 0 was the score after the first half. paignton claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 78 percent.

paignton's W. Beccari swung in a good chance from the left, but the visitors' defence were able to clear the ball. A free kick just outside of the visitors' penalty area after 54 minutes could have resulted in another goal, but E. Cooke got a hand out and tipped the ball over the bar. 56 minutes into the match, the visitors' central line of defence had to look on as W. Beccari broke through, making the score 3 - 0 for paignton. The players of paignton now seemed to think the job was done and acted more defensively, just waiting for the ref to blow the final whistle. P. Caneva could have increased the lead after 59 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park. swindon's D. Samuels refused to leave the field after injuring his achilles tendon after 66 minutes. A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in paignton's E. Glansbeek increasing the lead to 4 - 0. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by paignton, with 79 percent of the ball.

paignton's top performer was clearly P. Caneva. R. Barreto was a disappointment, however. swindon's best player was A. Bohan. On the other hand, E. Cooke's play was disheartening. The match ends 4 - 0.
