Dark skies made the crowd of 42082 at
Robbie de Wit Stadion a little nervous, but the rain held off.
Octávio Esmeriz was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Fernando Gómez and
Kasper Bengtsen.
VDS had chosen a strategic 3-5-2 formation.
Starters: Buitendijk - Mitra, Galán, van Duinen - Hagendijk, ter Linde, van Steenis, Scheepbouwer, van Gorkum - Wäfler, Normann.
Flower started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
They fielded: Noé - de Hoogh, Dijkhuis, Veratti - Altınöz, Huygen, Liwoch, Berendsen, Noyan - Justesen, Hammer.
Today, Flower's strategy involved concentrating on the flanks for their attacks.
O. Galán gave VDS the lead as he successfully challenged the guests' central defenders, then slotted the ball into the bottom corner, giving the keeper no chance. 1 - 0
A magnificent combination in the middle resulted in VDS's
D. ter Linde increasing the lead to 2 - 0.
The away team improved the scoreline to 2 - 1, as
B. Justesen struck home, set up well by a play on the left 30 minutes into the match.
C. Hagendijk unleashed a swerving effort from the right that the visitors' keeper did well to tip wide.
VDS's opponents know to be wary of
K. van Gorkum's speed, but it made little difference as he flew past the defence 33 minutes into the game. Only the keeper could stop him - and he did with a perfectly timed dive!
Halftime score was 2 - 1.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by VDS, with 54 percent of the ball.
VDS's
C. van Steenis had an excellent opportunity after 58 minutes, shooting after receiving a pass from the right hand side, but he missed the goal by miles!
Things were deteriorating for the away team as VDS scored another to make it 3 - 1 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for
S. Normann after 64 minutes.
The corner kick from
M. Huygen was powerfully met by the head of
F. Berendsen to make the score 3 - 2.
Coming through the middle
B. Justesen almost scored the equaliser for Flower after 74 minutes, but
D. Buitendijk made an excellent save, tipping the awkwardly curled shot past the post.
75 minutes into the match, the visitors' central line of defence had to look on as
W. Wäfler broke through, making the score 4 - 2 for VDS.
Flower reduced the lead after 82 minutes to 4 - 3 as
B. Justesen easily chipped the ball past the home side's keeper after a dazzling play from the right.
Possession in this half belonged to VDS, who controlled the ball 54 percent of the time.
VDS's best player was
W. Wäfler.
On the other hand,
C. Hagendijk's play was disheartening.
F. Berendsen performed admirably for Flower.
Ö. Altınöz turned in a dismal performance, however.
The match ends 4 - 3.
