22-07-2012 20.00
Clouds darkened the skies at
Santiago Sirodome as 26595 spectators turned up for the match.
Larry Allemann was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Jerome Kemplin and
Kevin Shannon.
Vitesse tactics involved an interesting 3-4-3 combination.
They fielded: Merreot - Fodor, Goren, Eigenheer - Prisco, Ricciardi, Vihar, Paniagua - Siemens, van Tol, Pohla-Reissmann.
Rulesz decided to use a 3-5-2 set up.
The following players took the field: Razak - Koops, Brillhart, Hyér - Ciobanu, Coelho, Cantón, Bøgeskov, Hochreutener - Petsalnikos, Habar.
Vitesse used their ability to concentrate their attacks in the middle of the pitch, rather than on the wings.
Vitesse took the lead 4 minutes in, as
S. Pohla-Reissmann broke through on the left and put the 1 - 0 shot just beyond the reach of the outstretched keeper.
Vitesse solidified their lead at the 23 minute mark, as
T. Siemens dribbled the ball through the opposing central defence and scored to make it 2 - 0.
Cheers filled the stadium as
T. Siemens broke through the visitors' central defence to put away the ball to increase the lead to 3 - 0 to Vitesse.
It was obvious that team Vitesse had instructions to attack in the middle instead of on the wings.
F. Eigenheer could have increased the lead after 35 minutes, but his shot hit the post after a nice combination in the middle of the park.
The teams went for the halftime break at 3 - 0.
Vitesse had most of the ball, with 58 percent of possession.
Coming from the right,
S. Pohla-Reissmann almost managed to score another goal for Vitesse, but his header was tipped over the bar by the visitors' keeper.
A speedy charge from the left side of the field increased the lead of Vitesse to 4 - 0 as
S. Pohla-Reissmann finished it off competently, firing in from an acute angle.
Confident in their lead, Vitesse's players relaxed and focused more on defending the lead than increasing it.
74 minutes into the game, Vitesse seemed a little tentative in their play as their organization fell to
solid.
S. Pohla-Reissmann wanted to play on, but the Vitesse coach had other ideas, and he was replaced 75 minutes into the game by
R. Biba.
The Vitesse captaincy was handed to
T. Siemens.
Vitesse's
M. Vihar was shown a yellow card after 80 minutes for slicing down an opponent.
M. Vihar could have put Vitesse up one more, but he fired into the side netting after breaking free on the left after 82 minutes.
Vitesse's
G. Merreot refused to leave the field after injuring his achilles tendon after 87 minutes.
After 87 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as Vitesse found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to
inadequate.
Vitesse claimed to have seen most of the ball, and the statistics agreed with them - possession being 59 percent.
Most important Vitesse player was
T. Siemens.
On the other hand,
G. Merreot's play was disheartening.
The most dominating Rulesz player was without a doubt
N. Petsalnikos.
I. Razak was a disappointment, however.
The match ends 4 - 0.
