05-08-2012 20.00
Due to an all-day shower, 26601 paying spectators got to see a match on a pitch-turned-bog at
The Penguin Arena.
Mahmoud Hamid was the appointed referee with assistance provided by
Farkas Csoknyai and
Eimutis Audrinis.
Penguin had chosen a strategic 5-4-1 formation.
Starters: Venturato - Lonzar, Callens, Šarić, Clausen, Ferrarini - Nieto, Eisemann, Cardoso, Krushev - Hanrieder.
Sperwer started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
The following players had been chosen: Chiaverotti - Bektaş, Wempe, Incudine - Seerose, Pata, Beetz, Öhrner, Månér - Svold, Melón.
Counter-attacking seemed to be the preferred strategy of Penguin.
It was an obvious ambition of Sperwer to use their ability at attacking on the flanks.
9 minutes in, Penguin's
R. Lonzar received a yellow card for going into a challenge studs first.
Sperwer's
V. Pata went down after a savage challenge, but could continue playing after some medical attention.
R. Melón was uncomfortable with the soggy pitch as he couldn't move the ball around with his usual grace.
33 minutes into the game
B. Ferrarini could see that the opposing goalie was out of position and tried an unexpected lob that the keeper just barely reached. The rebound went to
J. Nieto who failed to hit the target.
With 35 minutes gone, a long pass from the defence of Penguin resulted in a counterattack that set
V. Krushev free through the middle, but the keeper made a spectacular diving save.
Halftime score was 0 - 0.
Sperwer had most of the ball, with 58 percent of possession.
The home crowd breathed a collective sigh of relief when
A. Svold was unable to put the ball in the net after his show of skill down the left 64 minutes into the match. He was seen beating the pitch in frustration at missing such a good chance to give his team the lead!
Good work by the Penguin defensive line after 73 minutes produced a good counterattack chance, which cut elegantly down the middle of the pitch and found
F. Hanrieder alone in front of the goal, but his shot whistled just wide.
75 minutes into the match, the referee signalled for a Sperwer substitution.
S. Reizer came on for
P. Öhrner.
85 minutes into the game,
J. Nieto finished off a Penguin left wing counterattack, making the score 1 - 0.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Sperwer, with 58 percent of the ball.
Most important Penguin player was
H. Cardoso.
M. Šarić on the other hand, had a terrible day.
A. Svold performed admirably for Sperwer.
However,
C. Chiaverotti made a disastrous appearance.
The match ends 1 - 0.
