Cuelga tactics involved an interesting 3-4-3 combination.
The following players had been chosen: Whebe - Dobrin, Grethen, Bolding - Freire, Gallet, Thami, Pletea - Vişa, Maskin, Brighina.
Deportivo started off with a 3-5-2 lineup.
They fielded: Kassinen - Hloch, Glad, Weixler - Pinino, Kullenstad, Han, Vekris, Marlier - Sarge, Rossen.
Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Cuelga.
After 12 minutes, Deportivo put themselves up 0 - 1, as
S. Marlier finished off a strike from the left with a real cannonball of a shot.
R. Weixler of Deportivo took advantage of a mistake on the home side's right after 26 minutes which increased the away team's lead to 0 - 2.
35 minutes into the game,
D. Pletea had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. In came
U. Sikumbang.
Cuelga's fans were urging them forward as they tried to get back into the game, and their vocal support was rewarded 40 minutes into the match as
W. Bolding ran onto a beautiful ball played through the visitors' defence and slotted it past the keeper to reduce the deficit. 1 - 2.
With 41 minutes played, a quick exchange of passes on the left wing freed
F. Sarge of Deportivo to slip through the defence and score another goal for the visitors. That made the score 1 - 3.
The teams went for the halftime break at 1 - 3.
Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Deportivo, with 55 percent of the ball.
U. Ata was called on to replace Cuelga's
W. Bolding after 55 minutes following a nasty collision.
F. Sarge was, after 60 minutes, almost able to extend the visitors' lead with a well placed diving header after the ball had looped into the centre, but the home side's keeper
C. Whebe made the save.
After 67 minutes, a mistake by the home side's left defence allowed
P. Pinino to get through. He outclassed the home side's keeper, adding another goal for the visitors. 1 - 4.
P. Pinino could have added one to the visitors' lead if his free kick had gone just a little lower.
A drive down the left side allowed
L. Rossen to get in close and score another goal for Deportivo after 78 minutes, taking the score to 1 - 5.
At this point, it was obvious that the players of Deportivo lowered the tempo and became more defensively oriented.
Possession in this half belonged to Deportivo, who controlled the ball 55 percent of the time.
The most dominating Cuelga player was without a doubt
B. Brighina.
U. Ata turned in a dismal performance, however.
K. Hloch performed admirably for Deportivo.
L. Rossen was a disappointment, however.
The match ends 1 - 5.
